Asking Jews to pass a purity test and renounce self-determination according to a perverse interpretation arbitrarily applied, isn't just an extreme position, it’s a racist one. That’s before we consider the Green party is now backing violent dismantling of Israel.

Very strong and welcome statement
BREAKING: Bridget Phillipson responds on behalf of Labour to the racist and antisemitic motion today. It’s strong and she doesn’t mince her words to be fair. Bridget Phillipson MP, Chair of the Labour Party, and Minister for Women and Equalities, responds to the Green Party’s vote on Zionism at the Green Party Conference, said:   “It is shameful to vote against a two-state solution for Israel and Palestine and to condemn the vast majority of British Jews and Jews around the world as racist for supporting Israel’s right to exist. It is fundamentally wrong and the leadership of the Green Party must make clear that this will not be their position moving forwards.   “The Labour Party has always been clear that criticism of the policies of the Israeli Government is not antisemitic, and the Labour government has condemned Israel’s actions in Gaza and the West Bank. But today’s vote at the Green Party Conference crosses a line and should be condemned across the political spectrum.   “This vote underlines how important it was that we changed the Labour Party from top to bottom and ripped out the scourge of antisemitism from within the party.    "The Labour Party and the Labour Government will continue working every day to ensure our Jewish communities are safe, feel safe and have their rights upheld, as well as making sure we rid our society of antisemitism once and for all.”

NEW REPORT: Painting The City Red by Christabel Cooper and Dan Mead. Labour has a problem in our cities. Once dominant across metropolitan Britain, Labour’s support has fallen sharply - while the Greens have made significant gains in many of the places that should be among Labour’s strongest. Our new report asks why, and what Labour can do about it. theguardian.com/politics/202…

Labour members are more likely to think that welfare spending is too high than the general public. In today's substack our Director of Political Strategy, Christabel Cooper, examines our latest Labour members polling. Finding that not only has the composition changed since the 2020 leadership election, the membership now has some surprising views on welfare and defence spending. Very sad news. Peter was a very old friend from when he was John Prescott's number 2 in the shadow Transport brief in 1983. He was a great Labour character and a tremendous parliamentarian. Love to Lynda and his family. RIP
Very saddened to hear of the passing of Lord Peter Snape. Serving as MP for West Bromwich from 1974 to 2001, he was a great parliamentarian whose experience, wit and commitment to public service earned him respect across both Houses.

This is an edited audio clip which deliberately and fraudulently misquotes me speaking at a meeting with local residents last year. What I actually said and confirmed by a resident who attended the meeting was “I don’t care who stops the boats, as long as they are stopped”

The fact that none of these Cabinet appointments leaked is impressive. If they manage to maintain that level of discipline, that will materially improve government.

I worked with Ed over a number of years on @The_Tablet related issues. Lovely, kind and intelligent man who will be sorely missed. #RIP
Very sad to hear the news about dear colleague Ed Stourton. He helped me with great patience and kindness learn the ropes on @BBCR4Sunday - & we were fellow trustees @The_Tablet and fellow RCs. A huge intellect and great heart. Praying for him and his family this morning.

What if we thought about political leadership the way every other sector does? This is a fascinating piece from someone who has spent a career developing leaders outside politics. Rather than asking whether Andy Burnham has the "right personality", it asks a better question: how do great leaders grow, adapt and build resilient organisations? Our new substack offers a refreshing perspective on leadership, culture, crisis and authenticity that Westminster rarely hears. thinklabour.substack.com/p/l…

If true, this would be a very good move. James has more and wider experience than anyone Andy could appoint. He has been a local councillor, an MP, a minister, a BBC executive, a university Vice Chancellor and chief executive of a very successful business.
At the Institute for Government summer party where the talk here is that James Purnell could be Andy Burnham’s chief of staff…. … if he could accept the pay cut…

This isn't really surprising. Even at the height of Thatcher and her anti-union reforms, millions of trade unionists voted Tory and in some such as pre-Unison NALGO, Tories were sometimes ahead of Labour.

Brexit is a disaster, here’s how you can actually fix it. Not fantasies of re-litigating the past, but a whole new substantive settlement focused on growth and living standards that answers the question for a generation. My column in @ObserverUK 👇 observer.co.uk/news/business…
