Julius Malema Says EFF Is Ready to Join GNU If DA and Freedom Front Plus Leave, Promises to Use Power to Benefit Black Masses
Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema says his party is willing to join the Government of National Unity (GNU) if the Democratic Alliance (DA) and Freedom Front Plus leave the coalition. Malema made the remarks on Sunday in Soweto while campaigning ahead of the 4 November 2026 local government elections.
Malema said the EFF was not opposed to participating in the GNU but made it clear that the DA and Freedom Front Plus could not remain part of the arrangement. He said the party would enter government if both parties withdrew, adding that the EFF intended to use political power to benefit black South Africans.
His comments come after African National Congress (ANC) Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula said the party might need to review its relationship with the DA. This followed the DA’s support for the Electoral Commission of South Africa’s opposition to the ANC’s attempt to reinstate 181 disqualified councillor candidates ahead of the local government elections.
Malema was speaking during a door-to-door campaign in Soweto as the EFF intensified its election activities. He also expressed confidence in the party’s prospects in the upcoming elections and reiterated its position on the future of the GNU. His remarks come amid tensions between the ANC and DA over the councillor candidate dispute.
