Wondering if you’re ready to start a clinical psych PhD? It’s competitive, which can often lead to unhelpful, advice (e.g., “work in a lab for two years”). Here’s my perspective on what makes a person ready for a funded PhD at a research univ, independent of age or stage. 🧵

I created a template response then saved it as a signature block option. All I had to do was hit reply and select the relevant signature block option.

And institutional conflicts of interest, too. University IRB members are paid by their institution and often make decisions that serve the interest of the university (eg, mitigate legal liability) rather than the purpose of protecting human subjects.

I have also thought about writing something about the lack of IRB accountability and oversight, especially as related to requirements that increase risk of harm to subjects.

Our HR constantly cites “equity” to justify paying ppl less. Equity is never cited to pay ppl more.

I wish suicide prevention advocates understood these basic concepts of screening. Blind allegiance to “more screening” has worked against suicide prevention efforts in more ways than we realize.
I am begging people to understand that almost every test on the planet has something called "false positives," which means a risk that a result of the test is WRONG. A WRONG result can lead to necessary fear, worry, and at worst, unnecessary INVASIVE procedures or even unnecessary surgery. The chance of someone getting a false positive goes down when the person is at a higher risk of having an actual problem (ie. A specific SYMPTOM). This is called a higher "pretest probability." This is why doctors don't recommend everyone get every test all the time.
