The jokes just write themselves 🤦‍♀️
The new proposed salaries for NYC's elected officials are insane. Mamdani's proposed salary would be more than the combined salaries of the Governors of FL & TX. NYC Council members would have higher salaries than any state legislators in all 50 states. Legalized robbery.

I am not in favor of any elected official structuring their employment pipeline such that their advisors are disproportionately trust fund recipients or nepo babies This is a public integrity and governance issue, as a voter I support any effort to end unpaid internships

More like the government mooches off US! Mind you, NY just had their primary elections last Tuesday. Who do you think filled in for all the staffers who were busy campaigning for their bosses' allies on paid time off? NOT the people collecting a paycheck.
Get a fucking real job. Is every lib a grifter looking to mooch of the government?

What most people seem to not get is that most interns currently advocating for pay won’t even be a part of the Council by the time our work is done. This fight is NOT about what’s in our bank accounts. It’s about changing a broken system that only allows the wealthy to succeed.

Every single one of us knew what we signed up for. This fight isn’t about us. It’s about expanding job opportunities to people from ALL economic backgrounds. How do you expect working people to be represented in government if they can’t even afford to make it in the room?
Mfw I apply to an unpaid internship and the internship is unpaid

These interns just put on an inspiring rally to get paid for their labor. In a city where the mayor talks about public sector excellence, and the council talks about tackling the affordability crisis, it makes no sense to ask council interns to work for free.
I was fired as an unpaid intern by @NYCCouncil within 48 hours of launching a campaign to pay all Council interns, @nytimes reported. Rally. Today. City Hall Park. 1 pm. Because unpaid internships don’t work for working class people.

On the eve of New York’s primary elections, shoutout to the unpaid interns currently doing the work of paid staff while those staffers are out canvassing for their bosses’ preferred candidates. Thanks for keeping the lights on. We see you.

Exactly. Our City’s youngest public servants deserve the same protections, respect, and opportunities as anyone else working to make New York City a better place for all. Public service shouldn't be reserved ONLY for those who can afford to work for free. See you Friday!
I was fired for organizing for wages as an unpaid intern at NYC Council last Wednesday. @CouncilInterns are rallying this Friday for pay for all interns and an affordable New York for young public servants. We’re cementing our right to organize.

We stand with our former student — and supporter before and during our strike — @minafarahmand05 and all her coworkers in @CouncilInterns, who deserve to get paid and deserve not to be retaliated against for organizing.

Infuriating that @minafarahmand05 was fired for requesting a salary for @CouncilInterns It's embarrassing this practice has gone on for so long. 1) It's wrong. Pay working people. 2) When only rich kids can be apprentices, everyone else is excluded. NYC is a union town!
"A group of unpaid interns in the New York City Council launched a campaign this week calling for all Council interns to be paid. One of the interns leading the effort says she was fired shortly afterward." Read @petersterne's latest in City & State: cityandstateny.com/politics/…

Many of us CHOSE public service because we care deeply about NYC and the people who call it home. We're proud to show up each day. We just wish we could support ourselves while serving our communities, instead of sacrificing our own financial stability to do so. @NYCCouncil

For a city that prides itself on being a pioneer in workers' rights, it's worth asking why so much of the City Council's day-to-day work still depends on unpaid labor. A stronger city starts with valuing ALL of its workers.
