They weren't just a company; they were the steel spine of South Africa's industrial empire, an absolute titan born from a merger between global engineering heavyweights Dorman Long and the state-backed Vanderbijl Engineering Corporation. They were the master builders of the South, turning raw iron into industrial poetry. They built the heavy rolling stock for Spoornet, now Transnet, fabricated the massive pressure vessels and steel structures for Eskom's power stations, and built the bus chassis that moved the nation's workforce. Deep beneath the Witwatersrand, it was Dorbyl's massive, custom engineered winding gears and headgears that pulled gold from kilometres down in the earth. If a project required moving mountains or bending structural steel to its absolute limit, Dorbyl did it. Walking into a Dorbyl yard like Duncanville in Vereeniging during the eighties or early nineties was like walking into the future. It was a symphony of sparks and the blinding heat of blast furnaces. Thousands of highly skilled, blue collar artisans, boilermakers, patternmakers, and engineers, worked there. It was a place where a trade certificate was a lifetime guarantee of dignity. They were the undisputed benchmark of heavy engineering in the Southern Hemisphere. But just like the National Railways of Zimbabwe, Dorbyl didn't die overnight. It bled out over decades. It was an agonising, systematic unravelling driven by a toxic mix of corporate raiding, short-sighted executive greed, and a total collapse of state infrastructure spending. As the new dispensation rolled in, state monopolies stopped investing in long-term capital projects. The mega contracts dried up. Instead of protecting a strategic national treasure, corporate raiders and executives in the early 2000s went to work unbundling the empire. They chopped Dorbyl up like a stolen car in a chop shop. They stripped the profitable automotive wings, the legendary Dorbyl Marine shipyards in Durban, and the iconic structural steel divisions, then sold off the pieces to line the pockets of institutional shareholders and directors looking for quick, short-term payouts. By the time the dust settled, the mighty Dorbyl empire was a hollowed-out financial shell. The heavy engineering works were shut down, the world class machinery was sold off to overseas buyers, and what little survived was rebranded, retreating from heavy industry altogether. Look at the old industrial heartlands of Vereeniging, Vanderbijlpark, or the East Rand today, and you'll find the exact same haunting landscape as Bulawayo's Belmont area. You'll see massive, cavernous factories with their roofs stripped for corrugated iron. You'll see railroad sidings where the tracks have been swallowed whole by overgrown khaki weed and grass. Generations of proud, generational engineering bloodlines have been reduced to chasing scrap metal. The smoky fires have gone cold on both sides of the border. That is the ultimate tragedy of the subcontinent. We inherited industrial wonders built to last centuries, only to watch them get dismantled by a total lack of vision and structural rot.
