I thought it was just a battered Small Tortoiseshell on a muddy patch… but something wasn’t quite right. Then it clicked—it was far too big! My first-ever Large Tortoiseshell, emerging in the sun after months of Cornish rain. @savebutterflies @Cornwall_BC

In the last few years, we have surveyed more than 30 sites in England for the Large Heath and restored vital peatlands in Scotland with our Bog Squad. 🌱

Common Blue at Penlee Reserve today. With most of the flowers now dry and going to seed, it’s slim pickings for these later butterflies.

One of my favourite butterflies, the Small Copper. Feeding on the remaining Corn Marigolds at Penlee & oblivious to the danger which lurked beneath. Thankfully it moved on to another flower before the Crab Spider struck.
