We have to pay more for food if we want local food with local employees. It’s an uphill battle. Everyone thinks getting USDA inspection is the problem. Making it work economically is the problem.

Super small kill relative to expectations. Packers may just be serious this time around.
#cattle 97K inspected vs. 103K last week, and 119.3K last year, Sat 17K vs. 24K last week, and 6.5K last year. Week 526K vs. 542K last week, and 493.8K last year. YTD -7.5%

I spoke with Joel Salatin today (Polyface Farm).
He has the exact same assessment.
Trump isn't deregulating meat processing at all.
Buy the rumor, sell the news. The belief that Trump would deregulate meat processing and give farmers direct retail access was overblown.

"Just 3% of supply" is an ignorant statement in the commodity world. A marginal 1-2% shortage or excess sets the price on 100% of the supply. ie. MEX Border = +$50/cwt. live despite being few % points of total supply.

I always find it interesting how this industry looks at all fundamentals as percentages (Placements, Marketings, COF) but refuses to look at markets, returns and margins that way - always dollars per head and never % margin per head

One other thing to consider about the market right now is the Beef Packers appear to be willing to carry meat over the weekend if they can’t at least hold the market. That tells me they’re not planning to ramp up production at all.

In my experience it’s never about the specific fundamentals but about when market psychology switches from being a supply based market (because of short supply) to a demand based market (because of short demand)

NEWS: Screwworm has been detected in Texas, USDA confirmed - marking a serious threat to US cattle and other animals
Larvae of the parasite were found in the umbilical cord of a 3 week old calf
Screwworm was eradicated from the US in 1966

This is not true. We have no confirmed case within 1 mile of the border.
As we have done for the last 15 months, we will continue to share all information. If a case in proximity is confirmed, we are ready.

(1/4) A report from a state official in Mexico today incorrectly claimed that @USDA has set a date to resume livestock imports from Mexico.
This is NOT accurate.
USDA has not set a date for resuming livestock imports.

Honestly, the majority of feedback I’ve heard isn’t that they (Tyson) should have to operate a plant at a loss - it’s that they should have to offer it for sale for someone else to take the risk
That’s the government helping maintain a free and competitive market 🤷🏻♂️

Cows can’t add a single atom of carbon to the atmosphere that a plant hasn’t previously removed.
Carbon is part of a biogenic cycle and can neither be created nor destroyed.
People who try to frame cows as causing climate change don’t understand how science works.

To follow this up (and be fair to any hardworking, honest folks at USDA), this screwworm report was 100% fabricated by a Missouri radio station with no USDA involvement

I agree the defeatist attitude toward herd rebuild is anti-American (cattle guys have always been the eternal optimists)
I worry though that it’s largely because of producer age - few guys over 60 want to double up their risk at that stage of life

This idea that cattle burps and farts are harming the welfare of the planet is the most anti-scientific gobbledygook I’ve ever heard of, and you cannot convince me otherwise.
60-100 million bison roamed the Great Plains during the Little Ice Age. Roughly 87.2 million cattle exist in the U.S. today and the livestock inventory has fallen for over 25 years according to the USDA.
Bovine digestive systems do not control the planet’s climate.
