Before Turing Machines, computability theory, and computational complexity theory, there were computers. They were people: mostly women.
This is one of my favorite photos of a computer, because it shows her using two distinct computing methods.
I’m bummed that this platform has become so awful. The people I follow and who follow me (with the exception of a bunch of bots) are great, but the surrounding environment is gross. So I’m done here.
I invite you to find me and others at Bluesky. So far, it’s better there.
But the mathematical theory of digital computation became extremely interesting and useful, and became synonymous with *all* computation. Coupled with analog computing machines being replaced by digital ones, analog computation has been largely dismissed.
I’m heading to Frankfurt to learn and talk about analog computation. Come join me!

If you'd like to know why structural representation and analog representation are the same thing, you can watch me talk about it here.
Thanks to Tobias Schlicht for organizing this event!

I hope to see you there!
This was fun!
If you’re not sick of hearing me talk about computation (especially analog computation), here’s your chance to hear more!
(That should say “your brain is not a DIGITAL computer)

Last week, I was invited to give the Spring Convocation Keynote at St. Bonaventure University. I spoke on the topic of "Education in the Age of Artificial Intelligence."
This moment is an opportunity to think carefully about what is valuable about education and why.
New paper “Structural Representation is Analog Representation” forthcoming!

Am I committed to there being no physical computers that compute?

This is a disgraceful message. There was a soldier that I served with in the army that later was killed in Mosul, Iraq that said the reason he joined the military was because he believed that it was the greatest force for good that the world has ever known. He said the military not only taught its soldiers to be lethal but it also taught us to be compassionate and empathetic and care about not only the American people but also freedom loving and seeking people from all over the globe. This is the true warrior ethos that so many of us veterans know and love. I’m thinking about him a lot tonight and will be damned if sons of bitches like Trump and Hegseth will transform our great military into something resembling the Russians. His memory and service must not be in vein.

The future is analog (computation).

Is computation necessarily independent of its physical implementation? Now there’s a whole symposium on this question in the journal Mind & Language!
