It's only a trailer, but it suggests we're updating the tale for modern audiences by (for the 50 millionth time) attributing to "Capitalism" and "Billionaires" all the faults of Communism — which is, ironically, something the Pigs would do. The real life precursor to Animal Farm was Rosa Luxemburg warning Lenin that the Dictatorship of the Proletariat would lead to the Dictatorship of the Party and then to the Dictatorship of the Central Committee. Orwell's sympathies favour Trotsky (Snowball) and he was implacably hostile to Stalin (Napoleon), but Animal Farm is primarily a democratic (and less so a non-Marxian socialist) critique of Communism, as well as Stalinism. It wasn't that the Old Major's (Lenin's) ideas just so happened to be betrayed by Napoleon, it's that those ideas were inevitably going to fail because of the very nature of Napoleon, the pigs, and the lesser animals who were tired, illiterate, credulous and passive. All the animals, including the stand-ins for the affluent middle classes (Mollie the pony, arguably the hens) naively go in for the revolution, and either abscond for luxury (Mollie) or are purged for resisting when the state seizes their produce. The ideal was not corrupted by nefarious outside evildoers, except in Napoleon's propaganda. The animals successfully repel the old regime (Mr Jones) and his backers (the other farmers), though their interventions have the unfortunate effect of solidifying Napoleon's rule. Napoleon eventually initiates trade and deals with the humans to procure personal luxuries, but only after he has assumed dictatorial power and corrupted the revolution completely. Those deals are his initiative and on his own terms. He is not naively, stupidly exploited; he is the master of the world he's created. In the end, Napoleon's victory is measured by the corrupting influence he has on the rest of the world. The raven (the Orthodox Church) is allowed to return so long as it upholds the party line, and Napoleon inspires neighbouring farmers to emulate his practices. You don't really need to change anything to make Animal Farm relevant for modern audiences, especially in our febrile time where every other celebrity LARPs as a revolutionary; and I suspect this movie will prove as much.
