Friends, my position at The Athletic was eliminated today as the company shifts its sports coverage priorities.
Thinking of my colleagues today who met a similar fate.
Man, what a run!
It was a pleasure to provide fun and unique stories on the beat.
Thanks for following along!

To honor his memory, let’s get Scott’s book on the best seller list. Had been waiting to buy it when he had a planned book signing in Cooperstown earlier this month. Just bought it and will give my copy to our library, where it will reside forever. 😢
Thrilled to say my new book, Skipper: Why Baseball Managers Still Matter and Always Will, now available via pre-order in advance of pub date next May 13. A definitive look at managing over past few decades, what it was like then, now, why & how its changed

One #VedderCup memory. June 25, 2009. Day game in Seattle. Padres clobbered, 9-3. I believe Scott Hairston got run. Same day Michael Jackson died. The outlet I was working for wanted quotes about MJ passing. No way in hell I was going in the clubhouse after and asking about THAT!

Most Mariners fans know Alex Mayer for his insane stats. But he’s grown into much more -- now assisting in baseball ops, high performance and business analytics.
“He can marvel like a kid on Christmas morning at the simplest thing. He just loves it.”

I took this photo of Mariners’ OF Jonatan Clase while I was in the DR in July of 2019.
Good lord, his body looks so different today!
Schute: “Think you’ll make the weight?”
Loudon: “Hope so.”
Schute: “I hope so, too..”

One of the best weeks @thei5corridor has had in terms of traffic, subs sold and quality of stories -- on a short week with a holiday thrown in.
Running your own thing isn't easy. Feeling pretty happy about it this Saturday morning, though.

Paul Sewald arrived in Mariners’ camp in 2021 on a NRI deal after bottoming out with the Mets.
He was nearly 31 and was running short on hope and opportunities.
But the Mariners had a plan.

Many thanks to @ItsPaulSewald, Molly (and Chloe) for sharing their story with me (and for reaching out after my job was eliminated).
