Should I be adding sugar to my post herbicide application?
My response:
Amino acids are superior to sugar for corn and soybean applications because they directly provide essential building blocks for plant biology, supporting protein synthesis, enzyme production, and metabolic pathways critical for growth, stress resistance, and yield. Unlike sugars, which primarily offer a generic energy source, amino acids like glutamine and proline enhance nitrogen assimilation and stress tolerance, addressing specific physiological needs.
Amino acids also serve as food sources for soil microbes, feeding a broader and more diverse microbial community that supports soil health and nutrient cycling, as evidenced by studies showing amino acids stimulate a wider range of beneficial bacteria and fungi compared to sugars (Moe, 2013). In contrast, plants naturally produce far more sugar through photosynthesis than the negligible amount from an external application—applying a pound of sugar is like adding a teaspoon of water to the ocean, offering minimal impact given the vast endogenous sugar pools in crops like corn and soybeans.
Adding sugar risks attracting pests or fueling undesirable microbial growth if misapplied, whereas amino acids are efficiently absorbed and utilized. Thus, keeping plants healthy with targeted amino acid applications is far more valuable than adding sugar, which provides limited benefits and potential drawbacks.
We’ve been receiving tremendous feedback this spring with the Afrikelp liquid seaweed. Got another load in to finish up some planting trials and get some foliar trials started! #regenerativeag #SoilHealth #plant25

Join us January 29th at 1pm for a Youtube Live as we host Dr. Rob Shortell. Last week Rob joined us as we hosted a small chat with some growers and had tremendous feedback! They asked us to hold another chat so we thought we would offer it out to more viewers! Link in comments!
The busy week at Husker Harvest days continues! Last day so get out of the wind and check us out under the tent. Not only can you save your fertilizer $$ but you can also save your cash and simplify the process with $0 money down financing! #HHD24 #RegenerativeAgriculture
It was a busy week in Minnesota for the soil biology tour. We had many great conversations and got the opportunity to stop at many farms. Compost extracts and soil biology is growing for sure! Thanks to Minnesota soil health coalition for the opportunity! #soilhealth #Biology
Tyler and Chris are two farmers working together to improve their soils productivity. They implement practices focused on soil biology like the use of compost extracts at farm scale! #SoilHealth
What a great day it was for another farm tour that @walberg_chris and I hosted yesterday on our farms. Thanks to those that help put it all together and make it a great day of soil health learning. @NUTROBrand @AIC_Ingredients
