Even in scenarios where user knows their password, if they're conditioned to not typing their passwords, being prompted for a password is _quite_ jarring after you get used to a frictionless logon experience. You'll really think twice before typing password in a webform.

Short answer is that if the user doesn't have/know their password, it's impossible for them to be tricked into typing it into a phishing form or having it captured. There are of course other attacks, but this change does prevent people from giving away their password on accident.
