As a gay researcher and #suicideprevention professional, this work is deeply personal to me. This #PrideMonth, I’m reflecting on some of the LGBTQ+ suicide-related research my colleagues and I have done. A few findings from our articles that continue to stick with me: 🧵1/

A great few days with @afspnational and Bechtel colleagues in Louisiana and Texas visiting construction sites and talking with craftworkers and leaders. Inspiring to meet people who care about their coworkers and make mental health a priority. Learn more! HardHatCourage.com

Today is #WorldMentalHealthDay. My day started with a great choir rehearsal, then a walk to catch the fall colors at one of my favorite parks, and a pumpkin cheesecake from Trader Joe’s. Whatever it is, I hope you do something today that brings you joy! afsp.org/WMHD

So proud that this program has gotten this recognition. Working with the advisory committee to lead the evaluation of L.E.T.S. Save Lives has been a career highlight. A powerful example of community-driven, culturally responsive suicide prevention.

Excellent grad school advice from @CorbinStandley. I went in with the policy of “say yes to every opportunity” and “always do better than everyone else.” It worked, but in retrospect, it was completely unnecessary.
I love seeing the first day of #gradschool pics! No one asked, and I don’t have all the answers, but for those starting this journey, here’s some advice and things I wish I’d known sooner: 🧵

Saying goodbye to July. It was great to be back in Utah with family and friends. I enjoyed spending a few days with my mom exploring Snow Canyon and Kolob Canyon. It had been more than a decade since I’d been to southern Utah. What a beautiful state!

Suicide prevention depends on good science. A proposed OMB rule would impact suicide research by politicizing federal grant decisions, making it easier to terminate research funding, and restricting research on disparities. Comments close on 7/13 Speak up: afsp.quorum.us/campaign/fede…

Today is the anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising, a pivotal moment for LGBTQ+ rights. It reminds us that progress happens when people choose to push for a more just world. I’m grateful for the activists whose courage created opportunities for people they would never meet #Pride

🌈 6/ There’s a common thread running through all of my research: The environments in which people live matter. Affirming policies, supportive relationships, inclusive communities, and equitable systems can all play a role in reducing suicide risk.
