A Coptic researcher is serving five years with hard labor just for talking about his faith online. Dr. Augustinos Samaan, a comparative religion scholar, ran a YouTube channel with over 100,000 subscribers where he posted academic videos answering questions about Christianity and responding to anti-Christian rhetoric. On October 1, 2025, masked security officers arrested him. First accused of terrorism, he was charged with “contempt of religion” under Egypt’s blasphemy law. On January 3, 2026, he was sentenced in a secret trial. His family and lawyers were never notified. The appeals court upheld the sentence. His cassation challenge is set for November 15.
