Dick Williams hired me (Reds) and gave me full control over personnel, but advised me to do what was in the best interest of the club, not what was easiest for me.
I ultimately kept the entire staff for one full year, and inherited coaches like Elmer Dessens were absolute rockstars for me.
I could write a lot more about this and our approach from 2019-2021 that was wildly successful, but that's for another time. Suffice to say that I don't believe in wholesale regime change on day one, and I think it's usually a major mistake borne out of sheer laziness.
Attached is the Reds' audit I did in 2021 showing our Stuff+ ranks compared to other organizations. I'm proud of the work our team did from top to bottom - both new coaches and ones that bought in for the ride.

@halfkelly Beautifully edited and well executed. @drivelinekyle if an owner backed your vision how would you decide when to keep working on buy in with existing staff and when to bring in new people? Loved your approach with the Reds coach.

This report is inaccurate for several reasons.
1) I never worked in Player Development for Boston.
2) My job over 2.5 years was to build the Baseball Sciences department and to advise Breslow mainly on R&D initiatives.
3) Only reason I'm not in Boston anymore is due to working for an ownership group in NPB which is a conflict of interest of continuing work in MLB; wasn't possible to do both (sadly).
I still support the Red Sox and Craig's vision for the organization.

Good command doesn't guarantee good results.
A targeting problem shows up when the data says a pitcher is hitting his spots, but the location results are still below average.
It also works the other way: some pitchers have lower command but better location grades because they're aiming at better spots.

Some early estimated workload modeling confirms what @brewerhendrix mentions below
A higher level of throwing fitness allows for the this to be pulled off safely

A starter with a big chronic base can absorb a 15-20 pitch inning on his side session day without a meaningful spike in workload
Same inning for a pitcher without a solid chronic base could be a different story
You can't know which you have by guessing. You know by tracking

An early flip up is usually linked to early torso rotation. But what if that’s not always the case?
It can also be linked to early supination of the throwing hand in the takeaway phase.

Coby Mayo Outlier Bat Path
Mayo has the most pull-side Attack Direction in the MLB
He also has one of the most vertical Bat Paths — a very unique combination

Driveline's R&D team presented a new bat path model at Saberseminar.
Trained on 35,000 swings from 700+ athletes in the Launchpad, validated against MLB data.
It grades every swing on the offensive value it produces - contact quality, plane, and arsenal coverage. Then it generates every swing variation a hitter could take and finds the one that fits their body and training history best.
Not a fantasy swing. A realistic target.

On the new bat path tooling we've demonstrated to great effect at Saberseminar - reps from multiple MLB teams loved the research and talked about how we're pacing the field.
Maybe a pause is in order... 🤔

Cole Carrigg has been electric to start his MLB career with the @Rockies, but stands with the most to gain with a slight path change - a lower entry and a steeper plane for him can help lead to more productive outcomes as a LHH.
But why?
