Recent hacks across both custodians and self-custody solutions keep raising the same question: how to hold and manage your assets. The market was missing an account where you hold your own keys, with the institutional infrastructure built around them: recovery, succession, transaction policies, pre-signature screening, and a dedicated relationship manager. We built it, and we call it a Private Custody account. We believe there is no single answer for every holder, and that there should be many good ones.

6/ Not putting everything in one place is the oldest protection there is. That is the work we are doing at Control. We hope others keep at it too.

5/ This does not mean a third party holding your assets is inherently safer. We would not argue the reverse either. Only that holding your own should be a real option, safe enough to choose. The bigger question is how you split holdings between the two.

4/ The harder problem is human error. Rushing. A bad backup. Moving too fast during an incident. Close to 20% of all bitcoin is estimated to be permanently unreachable, and most of it was lost rather than stolen. Cryptography does not fix that. Design does.

3/ In both cases, the keys are not the only thing that decides the outcome. What gets checked before money moves. Who has to approve it. Whether recovery works when you need it. Who keeps it all in order. A setup that is sound on paper but hard to run will fail in practice.

2/ The chance of losing it depends on how the setup is built. One device holding one secret is fragile. But several devices are not automatically safer. More to keep track of, more to back up, more to go wrong when you need access. Complexity is its own risk.

1/ Digital assets are the first kind of digital wealth you can own directly rather than through an institution. None of that matters if the chance of losing it is too high. That objection deserves an answer, not reassurance.
