it seems like a lot of discourse on here just represents a divide between people who like their friends and are always willing to do them a favour and people who are constantly engaged in psychological warfare with everyone they meet

While some might think this supports the argument for Havana Syndrome, another way of looking at this is as a cover story to obscure the dimensions of the spying program the US and Canada had concocted:

Thing you have to understand about state and federal agencies going after the Mob between the 1980s and 2000s is that they didn't want to eradicate crime—they were muscling the lowlifes out of lucrative markets for white-collar criminals. Uncle Sam will always be capo dei capi.

These just scratch the surface. There are dozens of political clipping & UGC campaigns — each designed to seem organic & saturate your feed — and it's only bound to increase through the midterms and into 2028.

Democrats use it too. In the senate primary, influencers were paid to promote Sen. Ed Markey and to critique his opponent Rep. Seth Moulton. "We're looking for thoughtful voices who can bring these conversations to life," the gig ad reads. 4/

Content creators were paid $1.50/1,000 clicks to boost Ron DeSantis in a recent clipping campaign. The main rule was "can't make Ron look bad."

George Orwell, in 1984, describes how the Party keeps the Proletarians sedated with “five-cent novelettes, films oozing with sex, and sentimental songs which were composed entirely by mechanical means on a special kind of kaleidoscope known as a versificator.”

This comment about the Clippers calling it “podcast allegations” is so true. People have yet to contend with the fact the word “podcast” has nothing to do with the content. There’s an infinite array of podcasts. It’s the same thing as saying “book.” There’s novels, dictionaries, phone books, smut, cook books, etc. it’s just a delivery method. Not an indication of quality or information within.
It is shameful that @nytimes @TheAthletic buried the fact that the biggest punishment in NBA history was the result of an investigation by journalist @PabloTorre. And to call it the result of a "podcast episode" is a further slap in the face. He won a Pulitzer for this story and they call it an "episode" instead of, at the outset -- crediting him with exposing this scandal. Really really lame.

Wrigley’s Gum Stand 🌝
Featuring Wrigley’s moon-faced mascot, the “Spearman,” this terrifying figure once advertised packs of chewing gum in the 1920s. Made of iron with a celluloid face, it bears a worn message on its chest with a slogan that reads: “Be sure it’s Wrigley’s”.

Reddit used to have the worst search of all the major social platforms, and now it's somehow become the best by default just by staying bad and not getting actively worse.
All search has been ruined. Google date search hasn't worked in a decade, Facebook search doesn't work, YouTube removed sort by updated and search strings.
