Weekend @FT this week is a graduate seminar on AI. Banking, climate, supply chain, debt issuance and valuation, Museโ€ฆ my favorite: collecting โ€œegocentric dataโ€ to train robots and the โ€œarms raceโ€ it has produced, including โ€œrobot gymsโ€ and Airbnbs. Nice work @rafeuddin_

The United Nations needs to change, it needs to take more risks, and it needs to answer more directly to its key stakeholder countries: Rebeca Grynspan, leading candidate for UN Secretary General. andrewmarshall908218.substacโ€ฆ

Imagine that Russia launched a devastating cyber-attack on British rail system. Power outages at control rooms, signal failures, websites down, tickets not working, etc. And then nobody noticed because we are so used to this
Two train journeys across the UK this week. Both delayed by more than 4 hours between them. Hundreds of pounds for the privilege. Joke infrastructure, joke country.

When the Taliban seized Kabul 5 years ago turning Afghanistan into the only place on earth where girls are banned from high school I vowed Iโ€™d speak out every place I was asked. Thatโ€™s why they refuse me a visa to report their celebratory parades. But i will not stay quiet

This deprives U.S. law enforcement of a critical tool in the fight against money laundering and sanctions evasionโ€”including the drug cartels and fraudsters that this administration prioritizes. Itโ€™s also blatantly incompatible with the bipartisan law passed by Congress. Bizarre
Today, @FinCENnews issued a final rule that permanently removes the requirement for U.S. companies and U.S. persons to report beneficial ownership information. FinCEN today also announced that it will delete previously reported information by U.S. persons from the beneficial ownership information database.

Sad to learn of Anthony Kennyโ€™s death; a life well led, a genuinely wise man. An interview he gave to the Church Times a few years back on God, family and philosophy. churchtimes.co.uk/articles/2โ€ฆ

For whom the bell tolls - two of the Downeast Maine fishermen whoโ€™ve died this year supplying Americans with lobster and other seafood. My post includes my new song on this issue, an interview with a daughter of one of the fallen (who's a lobsterwoman) and explores ways to make commercial fishing less deadly (it's currently the 2nd most dangerous occupation in America, behind logging).

Iโ€™ve had the rare privilege to embed among traveling England fans at this World Cup and over time, Iโ€™ve observed how and why these chants emerge with the detachment of an anthropologist. Itโ€™s fascinating. England football chants are born through a decentralized, bottom-up process that functions like a cultural meme-plex. They draw on pre-existing, widely recognized melodies from the English cultural repertoire - pop songs, hymns, nursery rhymes, or TV themes - and layer new lyrics tailored to the match or players. The mechanism is straightforward - a single fan initiates the chant at high volume. If the tune is familiar and the lyrics fit the rhythm and moment, nearby supporters join in rapidly. Participation spreads organically through the crowd. Attempts that lack resonance or timing might fail to gain traction and fade quickly, though this is uncommon for well-crafted ones. They typically develop a signature chant for each beloved player. Bukayo Sakaโ€™s uses the ABBA track โ€œVoulez-Vous,โ€ with adapted lyrics. Jude Bellinghamโ€™s repurposes The Beatlesโ€™ โ€œHey Jude.โ€ These adaptations succeed because the base melody requires minimal learning, allowing instant widespread uptake. This system serves a practical social function as it acts as an informal in-group signal. Knowing the tune and lyrics demonstrates shared cultural knowledge and belonging. In a way you can think of it as a test: do you know the tune? Do you know the lyrics? Do you love England? Are you one of us? Supporters who participate affirm their place in the collective; those who do not simply observe. The process requires no central coordination, relying instead on rapid social transmission in highly stimulating environments such as pubs, stadiums or even subways on the way to a big game. Tl;dr: English football chants represent an efficient form of emergent group identity - low-effort to join, high-reward for cohesion, and continuously evolving based on real-time fan creativity. This explains their speed of adoption and persistence across matches.
the english fascinate me with these chants. how does everyone know what the chant is gonna be me and spread the information so fast. we can barely do the wave
