My identity is psychological, not biological. Gender is different from sex. Cooley: So you're operating in a delusion. You can never be a woman, but in your mind, you believe you are one. Melanie Cosmicfox: I think it's delusional to expect everyone to identify with their genitals. Identity develops separately from sexual organs. Wickiddream187: If I feel like I'm Black, can I identify as Black? Melanie Cosmicfox: That's different. Identifying with a particular gender is a natural part of human development. Race isn't the same kind of identity. Wickiddream187: But I've grown up around Black people, I'm influenced by Black culture. Why can't I identify as Black? Cooley: Let me take it further. If a human identifies as anything other than male or female say a cat or a cactus is that a mental illness? Melanie Cosmicfox: Not necessarily. But they wouldn't be functional in society, and society wouldn't have to accommodate those demands. For me, I'm asking to be accommodated as something that already exists. Society already has accommodations for women. Cooley: But those accommodations exist because of biological differences between men and women. Women have certain privileges because of their biology. They can bear children; you can't. So why should you receive the same accommodations? Melanie Cosmicfox: I think I understand your point. Cooley: That's my refutation. The accommodations society makes for women are based on their biology. And you don't share that same biology.
