Sickening. I wonder how many more children will have to be slaughtered by Russian missiles before President Trump can bring himself to say that that Russia's treatment of Ukraine can no longer be considered "adeqate"

Replying to @carlbildt
@carlbildt spot-on here. Europe (EU + UK) has GDP roughly 10 times Russia's. Putin's aggression is an existential threat to democratic Europe . Leaders should say honestly to voters that helping Ukraine & boosting defence means sacrificing other desirable spending
Europe faces a major challenge financially supporting 🇺🇦 with the unrelenting 🇷🇺 attacks taking a heavier toll on the economy of the country. It’s big numbers, but in reality the 0.2% or so should be perfectly possible within the 5% of GDP already committed for defence. It’s a question of political will.
This is a welcome step forward. As we set out in our report, a 🇬🇧🇪🇺 Youth Mobility Scheme would give young people and businesses new opportunities, whilst helping to rebuild relations between the UK and the EU.
It would also deliver on a key commitment from last year’s summit, and would complement the arrangements that the UK already operates successfully with 13 countries around the world.

Yes. And while the focus of attention will rightly be on Euroclear and the EU's responsibility to shoulder collectively the legal risk carried by Belgium, British Ministers should act too.

Pretty much Sunak's only achievement in in office was the Windsor Framework, which most legal experts say would be blown up by quitting the ECHR, along with the TCA and GFA. Telling that he doesn't even mention it. Fundamentally unserious, like his ridiculous Rwanda policy
Critics said it was fantasy that we could leave the ECHR and secure our border. The real fantasy is thinking there’s an alternative thetimes.com/comment/columni…

🔹The European Defence Treaty proposed in our new report would be open to every European democracy eligible in principle for membership of NATO or the European Union, with Ukraine amongst its founders.
Ukraine 🇺🇦 maintains the largest army in Europe, at approximately 900,000 active personnel, and by a considerable margin the most combat-experienced. As @DLidington argues, any framework for European defence which does not have Ukraine within it will be cut off from the principal source of military innovation on the continent.

Since 2022, 🇬🇧 has concluded bilateral treaties with 🇫🇷 and with 🇩🇪, deepened the Joint Expeditionary Force and helped build a Coalition of the Willing of thirty-four countries in support of Ukraine 🇺🇦.
These steps are welcome but insufficient.
Our new report proposes a new European Defence Treaty to provide a standing legal and operational basis for coalitions of the willing to act, drawing on NATO and EU assets as each mission requires. No state would be compelled to take part, and no state could prevent others from acting.

Europe faces its gravest threat in a generation.
Today the Conservative European Forum launches a major new report by @DLidington, the UK's longest serving Minister for Europe, calling for a new European Defence Treaty.
The report warns that the security of the United Kingdom and of democratic Europe is once again under threat, and that America's move away from Europe only compounds the danger.

It proposes a treaty which would:
🔹 Be anchored within NATO, strengthening the Atlantic Alliance should the US decline to lead
🔹Be open to every European democracy eligible in principle for membership of NATO or the European Union, with Ukraine amongst its founders
🔹 Include the European Union as a party alongside its member states
🔹Provide a standing legal and operational basis for coalitions of the willing to act, drawing on NATO and EU assets as each mission requires
No state would be compelled to take part, and no state could prevent others from acting.
