Been doing a lot more podcasts these days! Really enjoy conversations about row crops and being able to discuss the research we do here @IllinoisCropSci
Link to what we've been up to listed below!

This year was not as troublesome as others when it comes to corn disease, but a young researcher at the University of Illinois is working to make future years even better.
STORY: wcia.com/news/agriculture/fr…
With the pending weather it can be easy to focus on covering the acres the next few days, but that extra 20 minutes to walk behind and adjust can go a long way
Extreme example here, but the harvest loss is popping up at levels higher than ideal. 2 kernels / ft^2 ~ 1 bu/acre loss
The beans are up to the mirrors…lots to be excited about the potential in this field…long as they don’t fall over 😅

Early-season crop progress and conditions in IL🌽🌱
NASS corn and soybean ratings are near average; recent rains are easing drought concerns; too much rain in some places; and key growth stages are approaching.

The logic seems sound: if N goes up, S must go up to maintain the balance. But what does the research say? xitter.cf/UMNNutrientMgmt/status…

We get asked “what is the value of strip tillage?”
I’ll show this to answer that question.
Left row is No Tillage with broadcast of 80# P2O5 60# K2O. Right row is Shank Strip Till without P/K. Cooler soils this spring in ECIL limited S availability, as shown in the no-till row.
Last plots for 2026 went in the ground today (well, until the double crop season begins!). Ended with our no-till cover crop project, year 4!
The lighter plots are where we applied the ATS with the termination pass.

Ours trials in the past looked to 3+ this year a new project we are doing 2, 2.5, 3, 4 with and without. The purpose of 4 is more about showing you shouldn’t fear 3 than making a rec of 4

As we get further into May, it’s important to understand hybrid growing degree day compression and not pulling the trigger too soon on switching maturities.

Every year, we publish results from field trials that we feel translate directly to farmer practices - insecticide and fungicide efficacy, pest surveys, and resistance bioassays. You can find the 2025 results (along with previous years) at go.illinois.edu/pestmanageme…
