Itโ€™s an iron-clad rule that if Mad Milliband is in favour of something , itโ€™s a terrible idea
Miliband is preparing the ground for a formal apology here. And making clear money โ€” if not reparations โ€” will follow. The comments are worth a read!!

Slavery was an evil in which people from every continent and region participated. We should be honest about the whole history, not select the parts that are politically convenient today, especially given Britain's leading role in ending the transatlantic slave trade. If Caribbean countries are asking Britain for a formal apology for Britainโ€™s role in the transatlantic slave trade, will they also be asking the same of the descendants of African kingdoms, rulers and merchants who captured, sold and profited from the trade? On demands for reparations, whether through cash or debt relief, we have been down this track before. Twenty-five years ago, Jubilee 2000, Drop the Debt and Make Poverty History argued that cancelling the debts of poorer countries would give them a fresh start. More than $100 billion of debt was eventually written off, but many of those countries have since built up even bigger debts. Labour are already spending too much on Britain's welfare state, now is not the time for Andy Burnham to be providing global welfare. There is no reason British taxpayers today should be held financially responsible for things that happened generations before any of us were born. And I have even less patience for political elites in commonwealth countries who donโ€™t know how to make their own citizens prosperous now looking for another opportunity to blame Britain. As Prime Minister, Andy Burnham should be Britainโ€™s greatest defender. Instead, he is writing articles saying we need to confront our history (as if we haven't done enough of that) and considering another formal historical apology. Tony Blair already expressed Britainโ€™s deep sorrow and regret for our role in the slave trade nearly twenty years ago. There is no need to do so again. This is all another navel-gazing distraction. The Commonwealth should be looking forward, not endlessly backwards. That means economic partnerships to make us all richer and deeper military and security cooperation against common threats. If every Commonwealth summit becomes an exercise in presenting Britain with demands for cash then we need to start asking if it is worth the effort.

Palestinians have less child malnutrition then almost any other land in the Middle East and even parts of Europe - a recently Unicef report found the child malnutrition rate is only a tiny bit worse than the U.K. Hundreds of trucks of aid go into Gaza every day and Hamas is getting rich by twice skimming off the profits it makes from it (something shopkeepers in Gaza were striking about a few weeks ago). This idea that aid is being blocked is worse than performative virtue signalling. Itโ€™s lies. Dangerous lies.
Proud to be one of the 75 MPs that signed this letter from @amcarmichaelMP calling for further sanctions on Israel for blocking aid to Palestinians in Gaza

Very Trumpian - straight out of his playbook.
Nigel Farage today says Raheem Kassam is โ€˜not a former chief of staffโ€™ - which is news to all journalists who previously dealt with him as his former chief of staff

An oldie but a goodie. In 1968 a bunch of entitled hippy bastards sent a letter detailing their specious demands to the Warden and Fellows of Wadham College, Oxford. This was their letter of reply, which speaks to how far the academy has since fallen.

If the Met receive information about a foreign national allegedly committing crimes in a foreign country, what are they supposed to do about it, other than inform the police in that jurisdiction? They can barely police London, let alone south east Asia

How do these people sleep at night? This whole administration should be tried for treason.
Steve Witkoff to Putin: โ€œYou talk so much about President Trump being a humanitarian. You are a humanitarian also, sir, and I salute that. I commend you, and I thank you.โ€ Sickening!

The courage and resilience of the Ukrainians in fighting that great humanitarian Putin is awe-inspiring.
These four Ukrainian Warriors from the 65th Mechanized Brigade spent 320 days defending a frontline position in the Orikhiv sector of Zaporizhzhia region. Now, they've finally made it back from the front line. To reach the evacuation point, the Defenders covered about 18 km on foot over three days, through rain and fog, under the constant threat of Russian drones. They were then transported by armored vehicle to a location where their brothers-in-arms and medics were waiting. The group was led by Ukrainian Defender Vitalii, call sign "Cheburashka." All four made it out alive. Previous rotation attempts had been thwarted by Russian drones and artillery. According to the brigade, one replacement group was killed before reaching the position, while others were wounded and had to turn back. ๐Ÿ“น: 65th Mechanized Brigade

Oh, the irony! Go on a Japanese or S Korean train and people are so considerate they talk in a whisper so as not to disturb other passengers.
Ah yes, the main culprits for this behaviour...*checks notes* East Asian women.

We call on France to exercise restraint when dispersing the freedom fighters on the streets of Paris. These brave warriors for justice must receive immediate humanitarian aid, and their safety must be guaranteed in accordance with international law. Failure to comply will leave us no choice but to bring a case before the ICJ, in close cooperation with that renowned champion of human rights, Afghanistan.

This story really beggars belief, and is incredibly sinister. What on earth were the police thinking?
A mother was referred to Prevent and visited by police at home because of her visit to Israel and her interest inโ€œJewish issuesโ€. In yet another shocking case, Holly Passmore, a mother of two from County Durham, was visited at home last July by two plain-clothes police officers who wanted to know why she had recently travelled to Israel. The officers told Ms Passmore, who cares for her severely autistic nine-year-old son, that it was a โ€œsafeguarding issueโ€. A police intelligence report seen by The Telegraph reveals that the referral said she โ€œover-identified with the conflict between Israel and Palestineโ€ and was โ€œsupportive of Israel to the point that she has travelled to Israelโ€. It also described her as having โ€œMHโ€ โ€” meaning mental health โ€” issues and being โ€œvulnerable to negative influenceโ€. Three days after the visit, Ms Passmore lodged a complaint. Two more officers, including a superintendent, then came to her home. โ€œThey said that, clearly, Iโ€™m not a terrorist,โ€ she recalled, explaining that they were keen to reassure her that police did not consider her a threat or an extremist. โ€œI thought that was strange at the time. You donโ€™t usually end up with a superintendent on your couch.โ€ Ms Passmoreโ€™s concerns deepened when she discovered that her NHS records had been updated to describe her as a โ€œvulnerable adultโ€, before later being changed to say she was no longer vulnerable. It is now even more clear that Prevent is being weaponised by activists to silence people for their lawful and legitimate views. These vexatious complaints also waste police time and resources. Enough is enough. Read more in @Telegraph ๐Ÿ‘‡

Trump only thinks that it's Zelenskyy who refuses to surrender, viewing him as the main obstacle standing between himself and a sweet dealmaking with Putin. But in reality, it's not Zelenskyy, it's the Ukrainian people who refuse to surrender. If our president decided, for some reason, to go against the people's will and capitulate by accepting Putin's conditions, he wouldn't last 20 seconds in office. โ€‹And the notion that the Ukrainian people are "dying for Zelenskyy" is one of the stupidest things I've ever heard. I've never met a single soldier who thinks that way. They are fighting because foreign invaders would otherwise occupy their homes, kidnap their children, steal their property, and kill them. That's why, Zelenskyy or no Zelenskyy, they would still defend their country.

You are totally ignorant. I am a novelist and as a supporter of Jews, Israel, women and gay people (ie a Terf) I can tell you that these are what is difficult, lonely and professionally dangerous - not what Sally Rooney has done.
With her lonely stand for Palestine, Sally Rooney has exposed the contemporary literary world as a nest of cowards and careerists Where are all the Doris Lessings, Harold Pinters, John Bergers, Graham Greenes, Samuel Becketts that once raised their voices against war and injustice? Rooney stands almost alone

โ€œWHY?โ€ It is very heartbreaking to read this handwriting letter. That was the last question 25-year-old Majid Nikandish asked the night before the Islamic Republic executed him: โ€œTonight, I feel like a little child terrified of an injection. Only one question is on my mind: Why?โ€ We, the people of Iran, are living in horror. Every day, another execution. Another mother destroyed. Another life stolen. In his final letter he asked his mother to smile at his funeral. โ€œI, Majid Nikandish, leave the few belongings I have in prison as keepsakes for my family. Hello, my dear Mom. I know you have had a very difficult life. Iโ€™m sorry if I wasnโ€™t a good son. Please forgive me. Please donโ€™t be sad. Stay strong, and please be happy at my funeral. Take care of Mahnaz, Abolfazl, and Razieh. Tonight, I feel like a little child who is afraid of getting an injection. There is only one question left in my mind: WHY? To my sisters, Mahnaz and Razieh, I love you so much. To my brother, Abolfazl, I love you so much. I miss you all. My final wish is that you take care of one another and stay together, no matter what.โ€ Why did he have to die? Why was his life stolen? Why must another mother bury her child? I have no answer for his mother. We have no answer to his brother and sisters. But letโ€™s ask this question to the leaders of the democratic world: Why are you silent? Why donโ€™t you stop legitimizing the regime that is hanging innocent protesters every day? Donโ€™t look away. Donโ€™t leave the people of Iran alone with their executioners. Say his name. Majid Nikandish. And make the world answer his final question: WHY? #MajidNikandish #StopExecutionsInIran

One again, a reminder that this is the regime @Ed_Miliband is happy to cosy up to. The Iranians are engaging in wholesale slaughter of their population for daring to dissent. Not a peep from Britain about this.
Today, they hanged him. The Islamic Republic executed Ali-Sina Mostafavi, an Iranian mountaineer. Letโ€™s be brutally honest. The Islamic Republic will not stop hanging people because we tweet, share hashtags, or beg for mercy. We Iranians wake up every day knowing that another family may receive a phone call announcing that their loved one has been executed. How many more bodies must hang before world leaders understand that condemnation without consequences is not a policy? The United Nations has documented serious human rights violations, forced confessions, and grossly unfair trials in Iran. This is not a lack of information. It is a lack of political will. Stop treating executions as a routine human rights concern. Treat them as an international emergency. We, the people of Iran, are exhausted from burying our loved ones while the world issues statements. We are not asking you to save us with your sympathy. We are demanding that you stop granting impunity to those who kill us.
