County cricket fans often talk about tinkering with the County Championship points system.
Since 2000, FIVE different ratios have been used (without going into changes to BP).
But do such changes make much difference?
Do bonus points?
I took a look.
So what does this mean? In the average season you see little or no change, WHATEVER the system.
The most typical implications – even with huge changes – is that teams go up or down 1-2 spots.
Teams’ average positions across the board are rarely surprising.
ICC ratings: 2003-26.
First impressions? Australia have always been top or close.
Both NZ and SA have had moments at the top.
Bangladesh have climbed from the bottom to somewhere around the middle.
What else can looking at the ICC ratings and rankings over time tell us? (1/8)
Australia’s ranking looks like England’s with one important difference: the numbers are all shifted up one.
Instead of bouncing between 6 and 2, Australia bottom out at 5 (most recently after the 2019 Ashes) and frequently occupy top spot.
A little thought experiment.
If the Hundred had:
- gone for slightly less wacky and exclusive names
- given the teams first refusal for all local county players
Could it have attracted more county fans?

Hampshire's flag features a Saxon crown and Sussex means "south Saxons" making the name a good fit for both.
They would have had first refusal on 12 players who ended up playing in 2021.
