24.9% - that's the area of ocean floor on Earth that has now been mapped to "modern standards". The new figure was released this morning by Prince Albert of Monaco at the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) Assembly. An additional 5.4 million sq km of new data - equating to an area twice the size of Argentina - was added in the past year. A good part of this is previously proprietary data being released into @gebcobathymetry @seabed2030 database. Coloured in red is the additional area. When the quest to assemble a comprehensive map of Earth's ocean floor was begun in 2017, the quoted number was just 6%. So, rapid progress has been made, but to put the lack of knowledge about our own planet in context - when the new seamount catalogue was published last month it included over 19,000 newly discovered undersea volcanoes. Think about that - 19,000 mountains on Earth that we previously didn't know about.

Dear friends, CHECK YOUR FIRE ALARMS. Motivated by the devastating loss of an Aspen Institute colleague to an apartment fire over the weekend, I did. Three of them are nearly 10 years out of date, and weren't making *any noise* at all. Don't be me. Check your alarms.

It was six years ago, and my mate, Pink, had just been told he was going to die. He accepted the news with a grace I can only marvel at, but he said he’d a list of things he’d still like to do. We sat in a pub one night and read it over. Eight things? Four months? Ok. Deal. 🧵

Sometimes I wonder how I went from a diehard Red Sox fan to a more casual fan to someone who maybe watches one televised non playoff game a year and then I see what they’re doing with Xander and I’m like oh yeah that tracks

In a NEW letter, @RepRaulGrijalva and @USRepKCastor call on @POTUS to “leverage the full force of the ocean as a climate solution." Looking forward to a @WHOSTP & @WHCEQ #OceanClimateAction plan that does just that. bit.ly/3fc7Uqr

Contamination is the biggest threat to the recycling system. It adds cost, lowers quality, slows the process, and can lead to worker injuries. Here are 12 things you should never put into your recycling bin, dumpster, or chute 🧵:

I wonder how much we could reduce electronic waste and greenhouse gas emissions if we taught people to make basic repairs. It would cost more than a new microwave to pay someone to repair it, but a new switch is only $3 and takes 15 minutes to replace.
