Holyrood plans to toughen up its university oversight powers after Dundee posted a £30m deficit. Meanwhile here, UU ran up a £160m debt on its unnecessary new campus but opposes independent scrutiny. Why is NI the only part of these islands without proper university oversight?

Stormont and UU haven’t the capacity to deliver cross-border university expansion on their own. They need the political backing, financial backing and crucially, oversight, of the Irish and British governments. We urgently need a new North-South body for Education on the island.
No mention of the Magee Expansion Plan by SoS @hilarybennmp in his answer yesterday. If @NIOgov is already indicating the plan is dead, the British and Irish need to sit down to appoint commissioners immediately to deliver the independent NWU, as per the @RIAdawson blueprint.

Radio silence regarding Derry, are we really surprised
The DUG published ten key questions on the Magee Expansion report, sent to the Minister before Christmas. The Committee has only two questions to ask today: is this a first-class plan for a first-class city? And, if not, can we salvage it - or how quickly can we start again?

What a pleasure to meet with local author James Simpson and learn more about his debut novel True Colours ❤️ The story is set in our city and I can’t wait to read it and get his perspective on life in Derry! The book is available now to buy here in the Guildhall

“I think there are two ways in which people are controlled. First of all frighten people and secondly, demoralise them…An educated, healthy and confident nation is harder to govern.” ~ Tony Benn A reminder of an era where some of our politicians were genuine public servants.

Regional inequality is alive and well. Derry people's concerns were routinely dismissed. From the asset stripping of Magee to the abysmal infrastructure and lack of employment. Our children are leaving, never to return
As we approach the New Year, I end 2024 highlighting an issue I've covered extensively in recent times, that of regional equality. If you want to know why the city/NW languishes at the bottom of economic league tables, read this as a shining example. 🧵 belfasttelegraph.co.uk/busin…
