Ladurée: The Parisian Bakery That Helped Make Macarons Iconic 🇫🇷 Long before French macarons became a worldwide obsession, Ladurée was already weaving itself into the story of Paris. Its history began in 1862, when Louis Ernest Ladurée opened a bakery on Rue Royale in the city’s 8th arrondissement. After a fire damaged the premises, the establishment was rebuilt and eventually transformed into a fashionable salon. It became one of the early Parisian places where women could gather, converse and enjoy time outside the home a small but meaningful change in the city’s social life. Today, Ladurée is instantly recognisable for its pastel-coloured packaging, elegant interiors and delicate pastries. Yet one of its most important chapters belongs to the macaron. During the 1930s, Pierre Desfontaines, the founder’s grandson, is credited with bringing two almond meringue shells together with a creamy filling, creating the familiar sandwich-style macaron that helped define modern French pâtisserie. For a quieter experience, consider visiting early in the morning. The historic Rue Royale salon, with its painted ceilings and velvet seating, offers a glimpse of old-world Paris—a lovely setting for tea and a little sweet treat while the streets outside bustle with life. Ladurée is now recognised far beyond France, but its charm remains rooted in Parisian history. From a neighbourhood bakery to an elegant tea salon, and from a delicate pastry to an international icon, its story continues with every pastel box. 📍 Rue Royale, Paris, France 🇫🇷 Would you stop here for tea and macarons on your next Paris visit?

Basel’s art story began long before Art Basel. 🎨🇨🇭 With nearly 40 museums, centuries of collecting, and even a public vote to buy Picasso paintings in 1967, Basel was already an art city before Art Basel launched in 1970.
