One Year Ago Today, We Lost Ace Frehley — RIP Spaceman!
Ace Frehley (Paul Daniel Frehley; April 27, 1951 – October 16, 2025) was an American guitarist, singer, and songwriter whose explosive playing helped define the sound of hard rock. Born in the Bronx, New York, he became internationally famous as the original lead guitarist and founding member of KISS. Known as "The Spaceman," his powerful riffs, distinctive solos, and unforgettable stage presence made him one of the most influential rock guitarists of his generation.
In 1973, Frehley joined Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, and Peter Criss to form KISS, helping create one of the most successful and recognizable bands in rock history. His unforgettable guitar work powered classics such as "Deuce," "Cold Gin," "Detroit Rock City," and "Shock Me," the latter becoming his signature vocal performance with the band. His 1978 self-titled solo album produced the hit "New York Groove," while his work on Alive! and Destroyer established his reputation as a true guitar hero. His playing would inspire countless musicians, including Slash, Dimebag Darrell, and countless other hard rock guitarists.
After leaving KISS in 1982, Frehley continued his career with Frehley's Comet and several successful solo releases before rejoining KISS for their historic 1996 reunion. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with the band in 2014, he remained devoted to music throughout his life. Ace passed away on October 16, 2025, in Morristown, New Jersey, at the age of 74, following complications from injuries sustained in a fall. One year later, his unmistakable guitar sound, rebellious spirit, and extraordinary legacy continue to live on. Rest in peace, Spaceman
