Space programs and nuclear powered aircraft carriers are allowed to cost billions, clinical software isn’t. It’s software. No titanium heat shields. Software. How did we get into this mess? Find out in my book “FHIR and Loathing Las Vegas” £5.99 amzn.eu/d/5x0oIXJ

We're facing global insecurity, climate change, war in Ukraine and AI transformation, and all the Tories can offer is tax cuts for the wealthy and deregulation, leaving it to the likes of Elon Musk and water companies to decide our future,I said on Keegan on @Newsnight last night

We don't talk enough about how concentrated key tech markets are- cloud, social media, LLMs, AI chips. This @newsmediaorg event @FT was a welcome discussion on the lack of competition in digital markets and how it impacts economic growth and public trust

💯 this! The anthropomorphising of AI is fundamentally an attempt by tech companies to avoid responsibility for lazy, negligent or frankly dangerous design.

The first English feminist was a Geordie! Thanks for highlighting her plaque in Newcastle - her remarkable story is included in Angels of the North by Joyce Quin and Moira Kilkenny. And much has changed but not as much or as quickly as she hoped - and it can change again...
Mary Astell is said to have been the first English feminist. Born in 1666 she was an advocate for equal education opportunities for women. Here’s @Charlotty, ANother and I at her plaque tonight. 1666 - 2026, has much changed? @TheAttagirls 🫡

The @FT reported that at least half a dozen senior NHS leaders have links to Palantir. The list shows Palantir recruited the people who ran NHS data before it won the £330M contract to hold that data. Here's a breakdown.
Indra Joshi was NHS England's head of AI and set up the NHS AI Lab, so she knew what the NHS wanted to build and who the decision maker was. She became Palantir's director of health, research and AI in 2022, while NHS England was preparing the procurement she helped shape.
Paul Howells ran NHS Wales's national data programme. Palantir made him its director of health and care in 2021, giving it someone who had already run a national health data programme before it won one in England.
Harjeet Dhaliwal was deputy director of data services at NHS England and joined Palantir in 2022, taking knowledge of how that operation worked.
Matthew Swindells was deputy chief executive of NHS. Months after he left, the lobbying firm Global Strategic Litigation Council recruited him to advise Palantir while he was joint chair of 4 NHS trusts, so he advised the supplier and chaired its customers at the same time. He stood down from the trusts this year after the FT reported he had urged GPs to put practice data on Palantir's platforms. Global Counsel was co founded by Peter Mandelson, sacked as UK ambassador to the US in 2025 over his emails to J. Ep5teín.
Samantha Jones OBE was the lead non-executive director on the Department of Health and Social Care's board when the contract was agreed. At the same time she advised Carnall Farrar, one of the companies that bid for the contract with Palantir and won it. She's now the department's most senior civil servant.
Ming Tang runs data at NHS England and has pushed the rollout into hospitals. Palantir is a client of Global Counsel. 3 months after Palantir won the contract, Tang was guest of honour at a Global Counsel dinner with a Palantir representative present.
Palantir got its first NHS work during the pandemic without a competitive tender, worth around £60M. NHS England says the next contract it won went through a rigorous competitive process. I believe that by the time there was competition, Palantir already employed the people who defined what the NHS was asking for.
Palantir rejected the FT's revolving door description, saying the 32 names given to reporters cover about 15 years, 14 no longer work with the company, and 6 are armed forces veterans. It never referenced the health officials.
Hiring the officials who designed a national data programme and then winning contracts to run it isn't illegal. I'm not saying any of these people have done anything wrong.
As I wrote earlier today, NHS executives lied when it told the media and the public that Palantir didn't have access to identifiable patient records, and has now admitted that was untrue. It looks like the people best placed to challenge that were already working for Palantir.

We’re changing the rules.
When applying for a contract from the government there will now be one simple test: are you creating British jobs? And are you giving young people the skills they need for the future?
These new rules will ensure the £90 billion that is spent each year through government contracts supports British jobs, skills and people in every postcode.
