Our brothers and sisters in Gaza are not alone in their pursuit of rights and justice. The United Nations General Assembly has once again reaffirmed this reality. Representing the alliance of humanity, the General Assembly has delivered the response that those responsible for war crimes deserve. President Erdoğan emphasised the importance of preventing conflicts from spreading, keeping diplomatic channels open and bringing the parties to disputes back to the negotiating table at a time when the world is going through profound shifts. Highlighting the value of Türkiye’s ability to maintain dialogue with all parties to conflicts, from the Russia-Ukraine war to tensions between Iran and the United States, for peace efforts, the President underscored the need for the United Nations system to become more representative, effective and accountable in response to the shifting global balance of power. President Erdoğan stressed that the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement was not an alliance established against any country, but rather an expression of shared responsibility to strengthen regional security, deterrence and stability. He shared the message that Türkiye’s approach is based on building an order in which the countries in the region take greater ownership of their own security and future, rather than forming opposing blocs that escalate tensions. JOINT PRESS STATEMENT BY TÜRKİYE AND IRAQ President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan of the Republic of Türkiye and Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi of the Republic of Iraq, who met in New York on 23 September 2026, declared their shared commitment to the following: During their talks, in which the Turkish and Iraqi authorities addressed all aspects of the strategic relations between the two countries, the parties agreed to deepen their cooperation in the field of security. In this context, they agreed to fully restore state authority in Sinjar and eliminate the presence of illegal foreign armed elements. In light of progress achieved by these security measures implemented by Iraq, Turkish forces will gradually hand over the Bashiqa-Zilkan base to the Federal Government of Iraq in accordance with the agreed mechanism and timetable. The parties also reached a consensus on expanding bilateral trade and investment, ensuring the immediate implementation of the agreements signed, and accelerating joint strategic projects, particularly the Development Road Project.
