[3/4] As a proof-of-concept test of clinical relevance, patients' subnetwork patterns in the brainstem correlated with their level of consciousness after severe traumatic brain injury. Early signal, more validation needed, but a promising direction for precision neuromodulation.

[2/4] Using resting state fMRI from 1,000 healthy adults (Human Connectome Project), we identified 15 reproducible subnetworks across 4 major systems (default mode, sensorimotor, visual, higher-order cognitive), spanning cortex and subcortex together.

[1/4] We mapped and fractionated large-scale brain networks in the human subcortex using NASCAR, a method built to untangle overlapping, correlated brain networks, recovering structure that conventional methods can't resolve.

Blast wave brain injuries don't show up on a scan. No easy diagnostic test exists yet, so symptoms often get mistaken for PTSD.
Dr. James Kelly (our Chief Medical Scientist, founding director of NICoE): "We're getting there, but it's imperfect."
550,000+ TBIs diagnosed since 2001. We think the real number is 3-4x that.

On August 6, 2026, we mark 15 years since the tragic loss of Extortion 17. On this day in 2011, 30 American servicemen and a U.S. military dog lost their lives when a CH-47 Chinook helicopter—call sign Extortion 17—was shot down in Afghanistan. This event remains the greatest single loss of life for Naval Special Warfare.
Please take a moment and pause to honor and remember these heroes and their families.

The big advance in the science of human aging is the ability to quantify it and relate the metrics to health and disease. A new paper today @CellCellPress takes this to the next level with organ clocks and multiple biologic layers (omics) of data across the lifespan.
