This is the “why”. There are a lot of “what ifs” but this mom has her sons back.
A Virginia mom credits Flock cameras for saving her two sons after her SUV was stolen with them inside, even as Richmond debates the technology's future.

El Paso shuts off Flock. Police chief says auto thefts are up 62% since. Asheville police credit Flock with finding abducted children and recovering stolen cars. The council cancels it anyway. We’re making the wrong people’s jobs harder.

I’ve been watching this debate over flock cameras with an open mind. I conclude the cameras are important law enforcement tools for tracking vehicles, illegal alien crossings and movements, etc.  If there are abuses of the kind re improper surveillance, then local and state officials should build in protections and penalties. Blanket banning is, again, mostly an ideologically-based overreaction, as with data centers.

I don't want facial recognition scanning my face everywhere I go I don't want indiscriminate surveillance of my movements I don't want my phone's GPS handed over without a warrant. I don't want my wifi and bluetooth sniffed as I walk down the street. I don't want cities making money off my speeding tickets. I don't want a social credit score. I don't want my data sold. That's why I want Flock.

Imagine waking up everyday and panicking like this over a camera that takes pictures of state-issued license plates on public roads to catch rapists. Must be exhausting.

In Houston, someone tried to kidnap a third grader. There were Flock cameras nearby. But someone had cut them down, so the attempted kidnapper is still at large. I'm becoming radicalized against the anti-Flock activists. You people have no arguments. Children get raped and killed. You shrug your shoulders. "I don't care if a thousand children are tortured to death as long as one cop doesn't look up his girlfriend's license plate." You are unable to reason about public policy issues. You are the reason we can't have nice things. You should be ashamed of yourselves. More here. richardhanania.com/p/flock-m…

If a mayor blocks deployment of a system that cuts serious crashes by 90%, and people keep dying on those roads, that’s negligence and should be treated as such. @Waymo is healthcare.

Was great to have the founder of @flock safety on the program He was candid about their previous communications and “default settings” mistakes. I especially appreciate him coming on after I was publicly very critical of them The company has made a lot of radical changes to their offering and there have been a lot of miscommunications about what flock cameras actually do. Most people think they're doing facial recognition, when in fact they're doing license plate reading and descriptions of cars ONLY. Many people think they're keeping these records indefinitely, when the truth is they've now set it to under 30 days. These defaults and the audit trails they create to “police the police” should help some people get more comfortable with the technology. That being said, you don't have to be comfortable with the technology. Your community can vote to kick it out and dozens of communities have recently. Ultimately, it’s up to each community to decide how much privacy they’re willing to give up in the name of safety. Americans love to live in private communities, with hundreds of cameras, gates and security guards, for example. In fact rich people will pay a 25-50% premium to live in a gated community to get exactly the kind of services that Flock provides! However, many individuals don't trust the police with these kinds of tools. I have many concerns as well. I know these systems are consistently abused and once you give this power to the police, it's hard to take it away This is an important debate. Most of the time I find people with kids are willing to sacrifice their privacy and people without children, or who have a mistrust of the government, are least likely to support these types of technologies. I've learned a lot in nine years of building @Flock_Safety. Some of it from our customers, and some of it from the communities they serve. Today we’re announcing the changes that came from listening. A new standard for privacy, security, and accountability in public safety technology. We're also asking state legislators to go further. Mandate real auditing on every law enforcement data system. Raise the penalties for misuse. And if your state wants help building it, we'll do it for free. flocksafety.com/blog/flock-g…
