Dear Nadine
Great point you’re making about music helping people to live well. That’s why the last ten years have seen music cut back in schools. Joining the dots, Nadine!

A year ago we lost Judith Kerr. In case anyone thinks over-60s are dispensable: she published 10 picturebooks over the age of 80, had her first number 1 bestseller at the age of 93, and with it raised £1.5m for Save the Children's Literacy Fund. And she made every day joyous.

I have been teaching poetry in primary schools for 44 years. I did a Ph.D. on it, run courses, have written books about it. At no point, has anyone responsible for producing guidelines on poetry in primary education ever spoken to me about it. That's how education 'policy' works.

The young child hearing the words of a picture book being read, and looking at the pictures all the while, 'knows more' than the voice only saying the words! The child 'sees' what the text is not saying. This is great for a child's self-awareness and confidence.
