Did you know Filipinos are considered Asian American & not Pacific Islander, at least when filling out certain U.S. Government forms? Meanwhile, how Filipinos identify varies. Thanks for your scholar + work @professorjro @ChingChingTan2 @KyoungMiChoi
@kevinnadal
@anthonyocampo
It's AAPI (Asian American Pacific Islander) Heritage Month.
Factoid: Are Filipinos 🇵🇭 Asians?
Spoiler: For the U.S. federal (and Calif) government forms, yes.
And so I share "Filipino: Identity Beyond a Checkbox" shirleyfrivera.com/blog/fili… #BrownAsian #AAPIHeritageMonth

This was posted on the Asian SEA Story FB page. It’s exciting because it accentuates the cultural ties to Hinduism that span thousands of years. The borrowed Sanskrit, epics, trickster folk tales, attire and imagery still exists among many Ph indigenous peoples.

Len Bias died and then his name was invoked to pass laws that provided stiffer penalties for rock cocaine than powder, with the entirely intentional effect of imprisoning more Black people. Bias used to enshrine bias.

Loved hearing @aricianoo speak at #imaginfra quoting "Art would not exist if we understood each other" – thinking a lot about how we communicate and listen to each other's problems and dreams, and imagine solutions and mechanisms to create new realities

Asian Americans are still perceived as the “model minority.”
But this is a myth — one that flattens diverse experiences and doesn’t align with current statistics.
Here are misconceptions that have arisen from the trope.
