Fifteen months into the regulatory review process, Figma and Adobe no longer see a path toward regulatory approval of our proposed acquisition. Figma and Adobe have reached a joint decision to end our pending acquisition. It’s not the outcome we had hoped for, but despite thousands of hours spent with regulators around the world detailing differences between our businesses, our products, and the markets we serve, we no longer see a path toward regulatory approval of the deal. We entered into this agreement 15 months ago with the goal of accelerating what both Adobe and Figma could do for our respective communities. After intense negotiations, lawmakers have agreed on the European Union's pioneering Artificial Intelligence Act (AI Act), positioning it as the world's first comprehensive set of AI rules. This landmark legislation addresses high-impact general-purpose AI systems, imposing benchmarks such as risk assessments, adversarial testing, and transparency requirements, challenging even major players like OpenAI. Citizens gain the right to file complaints and receive explanations about decisions from high-risk systems affecting their rights. Notably, the act prohibits AI applications like facial image scraping, categorization based on sensitive characteristics, emotion recognition at work or school, and the creation of social scoring systems. Fines for rule violations are substantial, ranging from 35 million euros or 7 per cent of global revenue to 7.5 million euros or 1.5 per cent of turnover. Despite delays, a final deal is anticipated before the year ends, with potential enforcement starting in 2025. The EU's AI Act, initially unveiled in 2021, undergoes revisions to keep pace with rapidly evolving generative AI tools. Further negotiations, including committee votes, are on the horizon, reflecting the ongoing complexities and diverse perspectives in regulating AI. This 2023 report, by Extend Ventures, underscores the pressing need to explore diversity beyond conventional gender metrics in the entrepreneurial landscape. Unfortunately yet unsurprisingly, investments made to Black women are still shockingly low at 0.14% vs 12.88% for white women. Focusing on Global Majority Heritage, women founders, and individuals from non-elite educational backgrounds, it reveals stark disparities in venture capital distribution. Alarmingly, only 11% of funding rounds support Global Majority Heritage founders, significantly trailing their 18% representation in the UK population and raising questions about societal biases. With just over 9% of the total investment value directed to these founders, the report prompts reflection on the systemic challenges faced by women, and the even larger challenges Black women face in accessing venture capital. Whitney Wolfe Herd, founder and CEO of @bumble is stepping down from her role as CEO, with Lidiane Jones, the current CEO of @SlackHQ, set to take the helm on January 2, 2024. Wolfe Herd will continue as the executive chair of Bumble which oversees various dating apps, including Badoo, Fruitz, and Official. Wolfe Herd, who initially co-founded Tinder and later founded Bumble in 2014, expressed excitement about her transition to the executive chair role. She commended Jones' expertise in product and technology. Meanwhile, Lidiane Jones, with a strong background in technology and leadership at companies like Microsoft, will steer the next phase of Bumble. The news initially caused Bumble's shares to drop by 10%, marking a record decline. Analysts noted concerns about the impact on business operations and company morale due to Wolfe Herd's departure.
