The speed of progress on this has been scary/cool. I wonder if anyone is actively looking for an n*sqrt(log n) algorithm right now. Would have been laughable to look for one this time two days ago.

OpenAI is 11 years old, making it eligible for the Fields Medal.

OpenAI have created a digital djinn that has reached into the ether and extracted proven, universal truths. This was somehow a step in Sam Altman's plan to become a trillionaire.

This is a great and surprising result (well worth going viral) but this is not a replicable way of making mathematical breakthroughs in public research. arxiv.org/abs/2610.06783v1

Where did 10 gallon and cowboy hats come from? The Europeans didn't bring them over, and they're not from Native American culture. No shade (lol), they just seem so unique to a time and place.

Weird how we're living in the AI-everywhere era when the .com boom was just 25 years ago. There are investors investing today who saw websites pop up everywhere in 2000 and now AI agents injected everywhere and surely they must be getting deja vu?

"My grandfather was a civil engineer", I think, as I renew my personal website. "He built roads in Africa", do I import any Git repos? "He knew his neighbours by name", would you like to add an AI agent?

"and then everyone clapped" is a trope but I literally just saw it happen at @DublinAirport arrivals. Man dressed in an inflatable T-Rex costume holding flowers. When his wife arrived and saw him she burst out laughing. Crowd applauded as they walked off. Incredibly cute.

The lifecycle of discourse on here is that something starts off bewildering (coffee at an interview? Lesbian anarchist mask bar? Elizabeth Holmes?) then sticks around too long where all the funny stuff has been said and only toxic arguments keep it alive.

You gotta dip out before the unpleasant people take control of the conversation. If you're sticking around trying to show them why they're on the wrong side of it, you're also one of the unpleasant people. We've all been there, it happens, but you gotta be aware.

I'm generously viewing the Gen Z iced-coffee interview thing through the lens of a generation that missed college socialising, and has been putting up with Millennials complaining about every aspect of society, including jobs. The ones behind it are dumb but it's not their fault.

I want to see more AI in science (in that I want them to vibecode a manuscript upload portal that is efficient and not skin-burningly painful to use)

I sit here in the quantum computing realm, looking out over the wall at the AI one, where the technology is somehow both working and overhyped.

This guy has an intuition on natural societal structure that would fix most modern democratic voter self-destructive tendencies, if only those others in power would listen. I'm particularly thinking of those in Ireland, especially Dublin city councilors.
🚨 At the U20 Mayors Summit, Mamdani Says the Left Has Ceded “Quality of Life,” “Efficiency,” and “Fraud and Waste” to the Right This was one of the more interesting arguments Zohran Mamdani made today at the U20 Mayors Summit, and a reminder that he can be genuinely sharp when he drops the “central casting” routine. “In New York City, there are certain words that have taken on ideological associations.” “Quality of life has come to be seen as somehow a right-wing concern. Efficiency… has been taken on as a right-wing concern, rooting out fraud and waste, a right-wing concern.” Mamdani’s argument is that refusing to engage those issues actually helps the Right. “If you are staring at an example of social disorder or social inefficiency, and the left refuses to explain either why it has happened or how they will fix it, then the right gets to point at someone in the immediate area and say, ‘That’s who did it.’” The harder question is how much of the broader Left is actually prepared to follow the advice.

@DubCityCouncil please fix housing, transport and health, thanks.

Why does music talent not seem transportable like sports or business? Supergroups aren't generally better than 4 people who happened to grow up near each other.

*sniffs the air* a new conspiracy. Batshit insane. Low stakes, no politics. Just what this apps been missing!
Can anyone confirm or deny this??!?

These are classical marble statues carved from solid stone using chisels. They were not cast from human bodies. The close-up shows a structural pin or repair not a bone. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marble_sc… thecollector.com/classical-art-… visual-arts-cork.com/antiquity/gree…

I wasn't sure this image was real, so given that I live in Dublin, I was able to identify the street sign and I popped down to Moussa Fall, Fadlabi, True g’onsindhed, Flushed, Scorblam Caser 3 this morning and decided to see for myself.
The Minister for Justice @OCallaghanJim must conduct a thorough investigation into this #HateCrime that occurred yesterday in Dublin, committed by individuals participating in a protest. We must not stand for this and those involved must face the full rigours of the law.#IrelandAmerican 🇮🇪🤝🇺🇸

It took me a while to enter academia properly because of a distaste of that mindset, "get credit at any cost; overwork and scoop and usurp with no shame".
