Never forget how the Soviet Union handled Chernobyl:
On May 14, 1986 - 18 days after the explosion - Soviet leader Gorbachev spoke about Chernobyl on television for the first time.
He played down the disaster and called Western reports a "mountain of lies" and part of a "highly immoral campaign" against the Soviet Union.
The Soviet authorities kept information about the disaster secret, including medical records.
Secret documents show they raised the allowed radiation exposure levels tenfold, and even more in some cases. Historian Alla Yaroshinskaya says this helped officials reclassify patients and send some people home from hospital.
Radioactive fallout reached Scandinavia, but Soviet officials first denied that an accident had happened. They admitted it only after Sweden detected the radiation and demanded answers.

Police in Myślenice sent a quadcopter into the air to spot every “helpful” driver warning oncoming traffic.
Those who flashed their headlights were then met by another police patrol further down the road.
