Taking X break; can be contacted via ANU email. Meantime I work mainly on a project quantifying severity (rather than "potential") of all viruses ever classed as "human". Clear "emerging virus" literature deeply flawed, championed by group thinkers & funders; at cost of health.

The point that needs to be made loud and clear about David Morens pleading guilty to conspiracy to cover up communications about the origins of Covid is that this was not some scheme run by underlings operating around Fauci. It goes straight to Fauci himself, and we have the documentary evidence to prove it. They may never charge him, and will presumably point to the pardon as the reason while prosecuting only the underlings, but that does not change the underlying facts.
One particularly egregious example is the email chain below. Peter Daszak first reaches out to Morens about how to deal with the fallout from EcoHealth being blamed for failures connected to Fauci's grant to the Wuhan lab. Daszak plainly does not want to be left holding the bag.
In the next email, Morens reports that he has discussed the problem with Fauci. Even more revealingly, the group is also making sure that Erik Stemmy, the NIH program officer responsible for Fauci's Wuhan grant has his story straight.
Then, in the last email in the chain, Gerald Keusch of Boston University, who served as the backchannel in these discussions to keep them outside government communications, adds that Fauci had specifically warned them about using Gmail to circumvent FOIA, because if they accessed Gmail on a government device, the communications could still be discovered.
That is the point that should not get lost. This was not simply a few subordinates freelancing around Fauci. The documentary record places Fauci directly inside the discussions over the underlying grant fraud, the effort to coordinate the official story, and the mechanics of keeping communications beyond the reach of FOIA.

One of Fauci’s fall guys, denied the privilege of an autopen pardon, has pleaded guilty to conspiring to commit fraud.
I want to know who his co-conspirators were and what they knew. What does Dr. Fauci have to say about this? Was he involved?

Not good. “We show that the energy imbalance is a potentially strong new line of evidence to narrow our uncertainty about future warming. Our findings indicate that it becomes increasingly difficult to exclude models with strong future warming.”

David Morens, who was senior advisor to Anthony Fauci, has pled guilty to conspiracy.
He signed this document, agreeing that if the case had proceeded to trial, it would've proven the following beyond reasonable doubt:
Morens and his co-conspirators 1 and 2 (including Peter Daszak of EcoHealth Alliance) and others
💠conspired to defraud and commit offenses against the United States by hiding from public view various federal records related to the pandemic
💠emailed information to Morens at his personal email to relay to Senior NIAID Official 1 (Anthony Fauci) while instructing Morens to use means of communication that would not be discovered in a FOIA search
💠plotted and repeatedly expressed their intention to conceal federal records and provided info to Senior NIAID Official 1 (Fauci) favorable to a co-conspirator's company (EcoHealth)
💠used Morens' personal email to exchange federal records concerning the drafting and sources relied upon for public writings on the origins of the Covid-19 virus
💠concealed their communications so they could generate the appearance of disinterested scientific consensus in support of a co-conspirator's company (EcoHealth)
💠shared information about Congressional inquiries and FOIA requests to anticipate press reactions, develop talking points and coordinate responses
Morens faces up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.

I am bewildered, and not very impressed, by the visceral, naked, irrational hatred spat out by some defenders of Jason Arday. If a Cambridge professor is accused of being an unqualified charlatan, the accusation might be racially motivated. On the other hand it might not, depending on the evidence. The correct question to ask is not, ”What is the colour of his skin” but “Is it in fact true that he is an unqualified charlatan?” Please examine the evidence before leaping to the assumption of racism.
As for the idea that journalists “piled in on him” and “hounded him to his death”, most attacks were against Cambridge University. Jason himself was widely regarded as an unfortunate victim of foolish promotion way beyond his ability to cope. In appointing him to a professorship for which he was manifestly unqualified – in ludicrously describing him as “the best in the world” – certain senior members of the university showed a level of patronising condescension towards black people that could fairly be described as racism, while at the same time making him tragically vulnerable to such attacks as came his way.

Fauci was personally giving some advice to Morens on how to avoid an FOI of his emails.
He told him to get himself a personal mobile, and to stop using a government-issued phone for his gmail, as that made them FOI-able.
Morens had to get one. In the meantime, Keusch had to do the relay with Peter Daszak, while Morens was not to be directly in touch with Fauci, all as per Fauci’s instructions.

No kidding - it turns out the conspirators were Fauci and friends, not the people who criticized the pandemic response - who could have imagined 🥳
What this means is that Covid was almost certainly the result of a lab leak, to be more precise of research funded by Anthony Fauci, who brazenly declared it "worth the risk", and took it to China because Obama wisely paused this dangerous research in the US.
But it also means that the entire Covid response, an intense dramatization of the actual risk, was both a way to disarm any debate about the origins ("we are in an emergency situation in which freedom of speech doesn't apply") and a way to capitalize on that dangerous research on a fast track by selling us a vaccine now presented as indispensable. Is it necessary to add that it was a way to make billions in the process?
A "dramatic" situation, I might add, that the media embraced heart and soul because what sells better than tragedy? And what doctor wouldn't enjoy being breathlessly interviewed from morning to evening, as long as they indulged in a bout of virtue signaling and wise lecturing about the new opium of the intellectuals, aka, "the vaccine"? Not to mention our rulers, who have been gushing at ever wider restrictions of public freedoms in the name of "protection." Thank you so much, dear governments.
We live in societies that embraced such a phony ploy without a blink. We have a lot of soul searching to do indeed...
PS: Oh, and please spare us the "But we didn't know!'" argument. If you supported the censorship of the people who did know and were silenced, you have no right to invoke innocence now.

Your paper states: “The acquisition of an FCS in the spike protein of SARS-CoV-2 that is absent in its closest relatives that circulate in Rhinolophus bats has been the subject of much controversy. Lack of knowledge about the frequency and mechanism by which insertion mutations occur in RNA viruses has led some commentators to cite its presence as evidence of human manipulation.”
But characterizing the argument for possible human manipulation as arising from a lack of knowledge about the frequency or mechanism of insertion mutations is a strawman. The main reason the SARS-CoV-2 FCS has raised concerns about a possible laboratory origin is that, prior to the emergence of SARS-CoV-2, scientists explicitly proposed experiments to introduce such sites into the spike proteins of SARS-related coronaviruses.
Your paper ends with the conclusion that “the emergence of coronaviruses with FCS at the S1/S2 boundary is largely a function of host environment-dependent selective pressures, and is not limited by the frequency with which they are generated through natural mutational processes.”
Given that the discussion specifically mentions the SARS-CoV-2 FCS in the context of possible human manipulation, your paper should be careful to distinguish between two different questions: (1) whether coronaviruses are capable of acquiring an FCS through natural mutational processes (which your experiments address), and (2) whether the SARS-CoV-2 FCS actually arose through such a process (which your experiments do not address).
Thus, as written, your paper mischaracterizes why possible human manipulation has been considered and, in doing so, misrepresents the relevance of these results to the question of how the SARS-CoV-2 FCS originated.
This raises the question: why did you omit this highly relevant context from the discussion section of your paper?
