Dunkin' is almost everywhere these days, but its cradle is the Northeast. MA's 8th Congressional District, for instance, has an absolutely astonishing 151 @dunkindonuts locations. That's 1 for every 5,249 people!

Memphis annexed most of its current land after 1950, built for cars, then thousands left the old core by 2000. Too few people for too much road. IIRC, even in the mid-80s it had the most 6-lane roads per capita in the US. The city basically begs you to speed!
What is going on in Memphis?

Wait until you find out who the worst landlord in NYC is with over $80B backlog of repairs, unable to build new units w/o cost 2-3x average, and requires $500+K in repairs for each existing unit.
Sounds like capitalism just fuckin sucks

First data centers were bad because they don't employ enough people. Now they're bad because of traffic at shift change. At some point the objection is just to the technology, not this smorgasbord of other things people pretend to care about!
“A Memphis mother said there's potential danger headed near the intersection of Holmes and Tulane roads in Whitehaven.” “The cause? This is where SpacexAI data center macrohardr is located.” fox13memphis.com/news/commun…

You cannot convince me that right wingers love environmental impact studies and that left wingers hate property tax revenue.

Stop throwing a tantrum over computers. The future will go on without Memphis.
Protests broke out at a city council meeting in Memphis where the council was set to vote on a moratorium for data centers. The moratorium would pause all data center development for up to a year. The vote has now been postponed to later in October.

The city has been on a long slide toward irrelevancy since 1991 while our neighbors eat our lunch. It’s sad, pathetic, and completely avoidable.

This is a preposterous position to take and beneath the dignity of the greatest city in the world, to act like the government needs to mandate cinemas in specific neighborhoods.
I will not approve any prospective rezoning of the Kips Bay AMC 15 site without the inclusion of a cinema. Kips Bay deserves a say in its future and that future must include a movie theater and grocery store.

Has anyone asked the tenants - AMC and Fairway - if they even want to continue operating here?

This seems like a reasonable idea with precedent from Obama’s education department. The government shouldn’t be in the business of encouraging people to take loans they won’t be able to repay.
Trump is banning students majoring in degrees that don’t make enough money from taking out college loans. Degrees for social work, art, religious studies, teaching aides, and music will be hit the hardest. trib.al/NmmAzhf

Imagine going through the rigamarole of finding land in NYC, financing the project, and instead of building 200 units, which you structurally can, you only build 99 units, because of bad tax policy; at a time the city desperately needs housing. This is a waste of sacred land.
A developer just filed a permit to build 99 units in Long Island City totaling 134,000 square feet. The average unit size is nearly twice what would be built under 421a, and the rents will of course be higher. This is what 485x has produced. Politics distorting projects.

We’re sharing a solution to the Navier-Stokes Millennium Prize Problem, one of the deepest problems at the frontier of mathematics. The proof was produced by a group of agents, using an OpenAI next-generation model significantly more capable than GPT-6 Astra. The problem concerns whether the description of smooth three-dimensional fluid motion modeled by the Navier-Stokes equations can break down. It has remained unresolved for roughly 90 years.

Call it the backlash to the backlash—Unions and building trades say they will oppose candidates attacking data centers, putting Democrats and other long-term allies in a pickle. W/ @lindsayaellis: wsj.com/economy/jobs/blue-co…

How does a private power grid built by a private company have anything to do with hurricane-force winds impacting power lines and trees? If anything, weather events like last night might make more ppl/ biz do what SpaceXAI does Also did SpaceXAI infrastructure hold up? Anyone?
From @ImaniWilliamstv — 100,000 in MEMPHIS are without power (Don’t worry Elon’s xAI data centers and their pollution-pumping turbines are all good) @nonewdatacenters

It’s a common NIMBY tactic. None of them actually want to see the results of an environmental impact study; they want to bully projects into never happening.
It's strange that everyone super online is blaming Dario and Sam for the backlash against data centers when the issues people actually cite are mostly unrelated to anything to do with AI companies. People principally complain about water and energy, not AI fears.

In all seriousness I think this represents both a disturbing society-level inability to process basic facts that involve numbers, a lurch toward degrowth on the left and right, and a failure of mainstream journalism to go beyond just nodding along to the "concerns" of everyday people without checking to see if they're the result of a game of telephone that leads back to nothing

The unifying theory: a factory has to employ thousands of people, but they'd never want their own kid working the line. Yet the digital factory that actually runs modern life? Somehow also not acceptable!
"We have to get back to America making things!" "No to data centers." - Same people
