Fourteen years ago, the date of my first non stop solo circumnavigation became a matter of national importance, at least between Admiral Awati and me.
The departure date was critical. I had to plan it so that my Southern Ocean legs fell in summer, rounding Cape Horn in January or February. Working backwards, 1 November looked perfect. Everything was planned to the hour.
Then Admiral Awati decided I was leaving too late. “You’ll miss the summer window,” he warned, insisting that I set sail on Dussehra. An auspicious day, yes, but eight days earlier and eight days less prepared. We had reached a stalemate, sailor versus admiral, both equally stubborn.
Then it struck me. 1 November was Kerala Foundation Day, also the foundation day of a few other states. I mentioned it to the Admiral. He thought for a moment, smiled, and said, “That’ll do. Cast off on 1 November.”
And that is how my first circumnavigation began, not by divine revelation but by clever negotiation.

1/n I am an army guy & a Cantonment kid. First 21 yrs as child & next 25 yrs as officer. Absolutely cut from civil society.
I have only seen youth. 18 yrs to 52 years old physically fit guys. Women of age 20 to 40-45, children always in families. Nothing else.

The Ukrainian army is putting German "Gepard" Flakpanzers on its bridges in Kiev.
The Gepard's twin 35-millimeter Oerlikon guns fire about eleven hundred rounds a minute, with effective range around three and a half to four kilometers and a ceiling of roughly three and a half kilometers.
The jet powered Geran-4 cruises around 350 kilometers an hour, Geran-5 up to six hundred, and they often fly above five kilometers — sometimes seven. At those speeds the drone covers about eight kilometers a minute, so the Gepard gets maybe thirty seconds of engagement time instead of several minutes, and only if the drone happens to pass through its small engagement envelope at low altitude.

UPDATE | 20 MADRAS Armoury Theft Case
Telangana Police have arrested 3 serving soldiers Nk Vinod, Sep Sheshlu & Hav Praveen and 4 civilians in connection with the 20 MADRAS armoury theft case.
✅ 2 Kolkata-based civilians allegedly sold a country-made pistol to Retd Hav Mallesh and were reportedly in contact with him after the theft
✅ 2 others are Mallesh’s friends from Nagar Kurnool
✅ Arrest memos issued; relatives informed
✅ All 7 accused are expected to be produced before the ACJM court today
✅ Telangana Police to brief the media at 1100 hrs today
The case relates to the August theft of 12 firearms and 1,000+ rounds of ammunition from the 20 MADRAS armoury in Secunderabad. Retd Hav Mallesh was previously arrested in the case, with the stolen weapons subsequently recovered.
