💥 Where is the Mainstream Media 💥 A bus carrying members of the Larne-based Clyde Valley Flute Band was attacked on the Garvaghy Road last Saturday night after the driver took a wrong turn following a parade in Portadown. Two men wearing tricolour balaclavas smashed the windscreen. The vehicle required a police escort to reach safety. The photographs of the damage make clear how serious this could have been. Band members have the same right as every other citizen to travel safely on public roads without being subjected to intimidation or violence. A navigational error should never place anyone in danger of attack. This was a deliberate act of aggression against people who had simply been attending a parade. What makes the incident particularly stark is the location and the timing. For days we have heard continuous claims about the need to protect one community from sectarian intimidation on that same road. Yet when a Loyalist band bus ends up there by mistake and is attacked, the response appears muted. Reports that police have indicated prosecutions are unlikely, even while stating they will investigate, only deepen the concern. Those who were targeted deserve a full and determined effort to identify those responsible, including examination of all available CCTV and witness evidence, and proper consideration of any sectarian motivation. The rule of law cannot be applied selectively. It either operates on the Garvaghy Road or it does not. An attack of this nature cannot be brushed aside or treated as less serious because of who the victims were or where it occurred. Every citizen is entitled to the same protection and the same prospect of justice. The driver and the members of Clyde Valley Flute Band have our full support. Anyone with information should bring it forward to the PSNI without delay. Those responsible must be held to account.
