Most "Mac" code editors aren't Mac apps. They're Chrome windows in a trench coat.
Nearly every popular editor ships cross-platform first — Electron under the hood, macOS an afterthought. Fine for shipping fast. Not fine for your RAM, your battery, or how the app feels.
In 2022, designer Austin Condiff asked: what would a code editor look like if it were built for macOS and nothing else? @CodeEditApp is the community's answer.
23,000 GitHub stars. 1,100+ forks. MIT licensed. Free forever — built entirely by volunteers.
CodeEdit is a code editor written completely in Swift and SwiftUI — native from the first line, no web stack anywhere.
Here's what makes it different:
→ 100% native Swift/SwiftUI — fast launch, low memory, feels like an actual Mac app
→ Syntax highlighting and code completion on a native editing engine
→ Integrated terminal, task runner, and project-wide find & replace
→ Git integration with code review workflows built in
→ An extensions system so the community can take it further
→ Modular by design — its editor components ship as reusable Swift packages other Mac apps already use
→ The stated goal: Xcode's lightness with VS Code's flexibility
→ Still pre-1.0 (v0.3.6) and already at 23k stars — that's how starved Mac devs are for native tools
Electron won because it made shipping easy for developers. CodeEdit is a bet that the developers *using* the tools deserve better than easy.

More nitty gritty code folding details in @CodeEditApp. Now that the data model is done I'm working on making sure the ribbon drawing is perfect. Now, adjacent lines draw with a horizontal line, and collapsed folds inside hovered folds nicely clip to a matched border for clarity.

This was seriously hard to orchestrate, but I finally have code folding working while typing in @CodeEditApp. The issue I was facing was remembering folded regions while editing text, and doing it efficiently.
Now all thats left is a few drawing issues and a smooth animation!

Making progress on code folding for @CodeEditApp. Very much a WIP but I think I'm making some good progress!

Few years ago I came across @CodeEditApp
editor and asked for a feature.
Eventually I implemented it myself and contributed to the app. It was my first contribution to big project. Now the issue I opened in 2022 finally closed as implemented

Getting to work on a minimap for @CodeEditApp! Really happy with the progress already.
Internally, the minimap uses the same text layout system as our custom text view. But, instead of rendering text it renders little dots!
Next up is making it interactive, and more flexible.

I've been working with @activecoding and @thecoolwinter on a key feature for our source editor in @CodeEditApp. Find-in-editor seems simple, but we're essentially reimplementing Apple's NSTextFinder API for greater flexibility. Next, we'll explore replace, match case, regex, and more! 📝🚀

After some discussion and iteration, this is what we landed on for our notifications system for @CodeEditApp. It unifies the UI and is a bit more consistent with macOS Notification Center.
I've been working on a notification system for @CodeEditApp to handle application, language server, and extension events, alerts, and errors if user input or attention is needed. I am pretty happy with how it is coming together! What do y'all think?

It has been a blast continuing to work on this project. Lots of bug fixes and usability improvements in this update. CodeEdit has come a long way, and I think we’re getting so close to the vision we have for the perfect native editor 🎉
Announcing our latest release, v0.1.0! 🎉
This release comes packed with enhancements and fixes to the editor, themes, settings, source control, and search.
While there is still much to do, a lot has gone into improving the core editing experience.

Source control navigator history tab coming soon to @CodeEditApp allowing users to easily see git commits and their details. 👀
This is something we are doing different when compared to Xcode. What do y'all think?

This CodeEdit release adds something I’ve been working on for a while: async syntax highlighting.
This means that typing, scrolling, and loading files are noticeably faster. I wanted to share a little bit how it’s implemented because I had a lot of fun doing it 1/n
