Muscle force production depends on more than muscle size. It’s also governed by motor unit recruitment, rate coding, and the force velocity relationship. Recruiting more high threshold motor units increases the number of active muscle fibers, while increasing their discharge frequency (rate coding) allows them to summate force more rapidly. This is why maximal strength training and explosive training aren’t interchangeable: lifting heavy builds the capacity to produce force, while ballistic training emphasizes expressing that force rapidly. The goal is to develop both force capacity and the rate at which you can access it.

There are a million people trying to sell you the secret to jumping higher, usually by making something relatively simple seem far more complicated than it needs to be. Most vertical jumps involve a countermovement. We rapidly lower our COM during the eccentric phase, brake

Before we sprint, we often use a short GCT plyometric to potentiate our feet and ankles. We do these Short Lateral hurdle hops right before we Sprint for 6-8 seconds tracking max jumps. Do weekly and attempt to PR. Springy feet = Fast Sprints

A police talk show is already an unusual premise, but SNL’s “Cop Talk” pushes the format into comedy by treating law enforcement like daytime entertainment. The interesting part is the collision between a job associated with public authority and a show built to keep an audience entertained. Once those priorities mix, the conversation becomes its own spectacle.

My tweet yesterday about Rob Dillingham has over 400,000 views. Hundreds of comments. And a phone full of messages from people around the NBA. My article sparked conversations I never expected, with everyone from parents of NBA players and grassroots scouts to NBA executives, scouts and player development coaches reaching out. I wanted to share their perspectives on what possibly went wrong. Free article 🔽🔽 open.substack.com/pub/nbabig…

I showed hip airplanes to a colleague recently. He’s a fast runner, and he did exactly what most people do. He twisted from his lower back and his hips barely moved. I’ve recommended this exercise to about half of the 90 runners I’ve done a gait analysis for, so I see this a lot. The cue that fixed it for him: → Brace your core so your lower back stays still → Rotate from the hip of your standing leg until it won’t go further → Rotate back out again → Keep your standing knee pointing forward There’s no need to force extra range from your spine. The goal is to rotate from the hip. Done like this, one movement trains: → Hip stability on one leg → Rotation control at the hip, in both directions → Your foot and lower leg working together with the hip I tend to give it to runners whose hip drops when they land. If you only do one exercise outside of running, this is a good one to pick. Would highly recommend doing it in toe socks or barefoot to create more foot splay.

There’s still this misconception that getting bigger and stronger will somehow make an athlete slower. I’ve shared footage of Brian Oldfield and Werner Gunthor before because these guys were incredible examples of what happens when tremendous strength is paired with the

I wish I had done this drill when I was still playing. One of my favorite dynamic med ball drills for hitters. Great for controlling the load, maintaining balance, and slotting the barrel. The challenge is holding the back leg without drifting forward too early.
