Put the Student-Athlete first. Check in on them. Make sure they’re doing alright. Be understanding. They are a human being, a student, an athlete, a daughter, a son, and so much more. We have to take care of them. Their life is significantly more valuable than “the grind”

Joe Mazzulla has been practicing what he preaches at the Boston Celtics… He’s been handing over coaching responsibilities. Giving his assistants opportunities to lead. Giving veteran guard Mike Conley responsibility for managing substitutions. Allowing people to experience decisions, uncertainty and responsibility from a different perspective. I love this. Because coaches often talk about wanting more leadership from their players. Ownership. Accountability. Independence. But here’s my question… What opportunities are you actually giving your players to develop these qualities? Leadership doesn’t magically appear because a coach demands it. Leadership needs to be developed. Through experiences. Through conversations. Through decision-making. Through responsibility. And, importantly, through mistakes. Think about it… When a coach makes every decision, provides every answer, and solves every problem, what are the players learning? Perhaps they’re learning to become dependent. Perhaps they’re learning to wait for instructions. Perhaps they’re learning that leadership belongs to somebody else. Now contrast that with a coach who deliberately creates opportunities for players to think, communicate, collaborate, and make decisions. A coach who asks questions rather than immediately providing answers. A coach who gives players responsibility and then helps them reflect. That’s a coach developing independent competitors. And independence matters enormously in sport. Because when the whistle blows, players must perceive, decide and act. They must respond to changing circumstances. They must communicate and coordinate. They must take control and take charge. So here’s a challenge for coaches… Don’t simply demand leadership. Design opportunities for leadership. Evrty day of every week, and in every training session. Because the best leaders don’t just lead…the best leaders create more leaders. *********************************** There’s a great source here on the work of Coach Mazzulla: buff.ly/Tt9oCJ7

Over the last seven seasons, Illinois has cut its midrange share by nearly two-thirds. The Illini went from 69th to 7th among high-majors in three-point share. Great teams are chasing high-value shots 👇

REBOUNDING ANALYTICS and SCHEME We know that shooting ~ 33% from 3 is the same as shooting 50% from 2. But not all 2 point FGs are created equally, obviously. Below is the offensive rebound rate for various shot types (Sloan Sports Conference). **Rebound % > Total Rebounds, especially when analyzing scheme. Inside 6 feet: 36.6% 6-10 feet: 28% 10-21.5 feet: 21.1% Three Pointers: 25.5% This, again, points to the fact that the mid range shot is the least efficient shot in basketball. With higher rebound rates, naturally you get higher FT % rates, which is one of the most efficient shots in the sport and impacts the game tremendously. More importantly this shows us SHOT QUALITY is a dual purpose advanced analytic. Teams who shoot quality shots, will naturally rebound at a higher %. Reverse engineering this process, you can gather information towards answering your ‘rebounding vs getting back’ philosophy question (@aaronfearne14 is amazing with this). I don’t think there is a right or wrong answer here, except that working inside/out and collapsing help defenders is clearly the superior way to play, whether in transition or in half court.

Agreed! Stop doing the mile for basketball conditioning. Luckily, I had Don Kelbick (longtime college coach) knock me upside the head (figuratively) 20 years ago on this topic. He said if you're going to condition your players, put a ball in their hand, so you get better at basketball at the same time. You're more efficient with your time that way. With some simple adjustments to practice/workout design, it's easy to accomplish. I personally don't care if it's unopposed drills, opposed drills, or small-sided games. I'd much rather do those activities than running long distance.... IF I'm preparing for basketball. If you love to run and want to train to become a better runner, by all means, do it. From my viewpoint, speed and explosiveness should be a part of your athletic development workout. I also found it funny that the legendary athletic development coach Vern Gambetta ( @coachgambetta ) commented on this post with the same viewpoint as @brianmccormick . That never stops the trolls, though. 😀 One more point... I ran cross country one year while in high school. During the season, I remember I hadn't played basketball for a few weeks. I went and played a pickup game. I was not in basketball shape. I got winded pretty easily. That's because we did little training that represented the real demands in the game of basketball... which is short bursts of running hard with short-time periods of rest. (Tip of the hat once again to @coachgambetta as I learned that in his Athletic Development book 15 years ago or so. ) For better or worse, in our Cross Country training, there wasn't much sprinting or interval training. That's not to say, a good cross country coach doesn't implement those things. Ours just didn't.
It's that time of year when college basketball coaches brag about their players' mile times, and college players post their walks to the gym at 5:30 A.M. #FakeFundamentals

I could retweet this every day ⬇️
Lately I’ve heard a lot of parents say, “That coach took my kid’s confidence.” Here’s my perspective: no one should be able to take your confidence. Confidence comes from the work you put in when nobody is watching. Real ones understand that. A coach can’t give you confidence, and they shouldn’t be able to take it away. What a coach gives you is trust—trust that you’ll be consistent, prepared, and ready when your opportunity comes. If you’re putting in the work every day, your confidence should already be there. Then it’s your job to show coaches they can trust you by competing, staying consistent, and believing in your abilities. Confidence is earned in the gym. Trust is earned with your actions.

Everyone keeps talking about officiating. I decided to start tracking it. Every Caitlin Clark game. Every official. Every crew. 📊 Win-loss record. 🏀 Free throws. 🚨 Personal fouls. 🟨 Technical fouls. 🚩 Flagrants. 📋 Discipline history. The goal isn’t to prove a narrative. The goal is to replace opinions with data. This is just Version 1.0. The database will grow after every game, and every official’s report card will evolve with it. No cherry-picked clips. Just the numbers. #CaitlinClark #IndianaFever #WNBA #SportsAnalytics #Basketball #Data #WNBATwitter @IndianaFever @WNBA @NBA – at Indianapolis, IN
