DC Ted Monachino is out. But Maryland's problems go beyond one coordinator.
Michael Locksley has had five lead defensive coordinators and five offensive coordinators.
When does the responsibility fall on the head coach?
On today's move:

Michael Locksley was asked if Saturday could be his last game coaching Maryland: “I won’t get into that.”
Malik Washington was asked how the team would respond if Locksley were fired: “If the scenario arises, the scenario arises.”
An notable exchange.

Maryland has given up 24 unanswered points to 1-4 Rutgers at home on homecoming.
Even with the way this season has gone, this is unbelievable.

WILL MARYLAND PART WAYS WITH MIKE LOCKSLEY?
After another gut wrenching loss in College Park, the Terps enter their bye week 2-5 this season. Maryland allowed 24 unanswered points to Rutgers on Homecoming after leading 23-13 at halftime. Maryland fell 37-30.
Rutgers is 2-4 this season and lost their opening game to UMass who went 0-12 in 2025.
Credit to Terps QB Malik Washington who professionally answered many difficult questions after the game. He has been steadfast in his support for Mike Locksley through struggles, and has reiterated he came to Maryland to play for Locks. I asked him what his response is if the school is considering firing Mike Locksley during the bye week.
Malik said: "If the scenario arises, scenario arises, we'll deal with it. If it doesn't arise, it doesn't arise and we'll deal with either way. Regardless, it's about the team. It's about us together as a unit."
When asked by @Mikephowes how he would want his legacy to remembered if this is the end of his tenure in College Park, Locksley did not entertain the possibility and said he will keep coaching and supporting his players until the school tells him he "can't anymore."

This should be in every locker room in the country.
Tough ass gamers can beat the hall of famers.
Pat Murphy is a JYD and his team took on his personality and not the personality of the data nerds in the office.
The people that say the Brewers are a data and analytics organization have no idea how valuable toughness and resilience and basic fundamentals are in competitive athletics.
They also do not understand team chemistry is built with the demand of accountability from the manager and coaches and most importantly players.
Brewers Ball is real baseball because of real baseball people.
“They may have a bunch of Hall of Famers, but we have a bunch of gamers. And the gamers won this week.”

THANK YOU to Mike and Karen Weissel, parents of #merrillmade alum Brendan ’26 and fellow Terp Brad ’20, for launching an endowment of #UMD's Testudo Mascot Program! Brendan and Brad are both proud former Testudos.
Funds earned from the endowment can pay for additional Testudo suits and mascot training camps, among other program needs. The new gift follows the Weissels' earlier donation to design and buy new heads for Testudo.
Incredible generosity to support the symbol of the University of Maryland! #fearlessjournalism

For decades, October 15th marked the official start of college basketball practice, it was a day everyone looked forward to. Some teams celebrated with Midnight Madness, while others kicked things off with early-morning breakfast and practice.
If you’ve coached or played it’s a date you’re unlikely to forget. #collegebasketvall

Why do sports create such tight bonds? You get to see each other at your most vulnerable points.
Fatigued, stressed, anxious, exhausted, overjoyed, and overwhelmed.
We ditch the facade.
Shared stress and vulnerability bring people together.
We need more of that in life.

FWIW: The phrase “burn the boats” traces its roots to ancient military history, most famously associated with Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés, who arrived in Mexico in 1519. According to popular legend, Cortés ordered his ships burned to eliminate any possibility of retreat, forcing his men to commit fully to the mission ahead. In reality, historians believe he had the ships dismantled or deliberately sunk rather than burned. Similar stories date back even further, including the Chinese general Xiang Yu in 207 BC. Regardless of its precise origins, the message has endured for centuries: eliminate the escape routes, commit to the mission, and move forward with the determination that turning back is simply not an option. #history #cfb #ucla

You overcome this by having an elite X’s and O’s guy. The harsh reality is that we’ll never be able to out-recruit the blue bloods. Recruiting chops only take you so far at a place like Maryland. That’s not to say we can’t attract talent, but having a team that’s more disciplined and prepared than our opponents is what will win us games in between the lines.

If Maryland never fired Ralph and he kept his .600 winning percentage and continued his $2 million pay raises, Maryland would have 33 more wins and saved $18 million in that span. @umterps
