Massachusetts, what’s your answer? We have held back players long enough and if we truly believe in “educational athletics” we should allow strong coach-player relationships to be built. We are so behind when it comes to helping players who want to get better.
Interesting. Colorado allows there HS Coaches to Coach Fall League. Michigan does not allow HS Coaches to Coach Fall League. Does Michigan want their HS Players to get better and have a better chance to earn scholarships?

We need to live who we want to be every single day. Through good and bad, we have to live the life that makes us proud of who we are, and that allows us to impact this world positively. #CommitToExcellence

This fires me up every time I watch it. Nothing great comes from being common…be the one who refuses to give in or be outworked! #Relentless
"You don’t get rewarded for doing what is required."@inkyjohnson Greatness is not given to a chosen few. Greatness is given to the few who choose to do 'more than what's required'. To be great, you have to give great -great sacrifice, great focus, great discipline, great effort.

I think the exact same way and would choose this route again. We want everyone to play a role in leading and not just name players who may or may not actually take on the role. Love that more coaches are moving this way and that teams are benefitting from it.
“Everybody knows who the leaders are.” Curt Cignetti said he has never voted for captains. The longer I coached, the more I understood exactly what he meant. Some years we had captains. Some years we didn’t. We selected them differently depending on the team. But I also saw choosing captains create more problems than it solved. So when coaches would ask me, “What if we pick the wrong captains?” My answer became pretty simple: Then don’t pick them. Develop ALL of your leaders. Build collective leadership. Give kids opportunities to lead without needing a title. Because Cignetti is right. Your players know who the leaders are. Your coaches know. Your locker room knows. Leadership rises to the top. You don’t need a “C” on your chest to lead. And giving someone the title of captain doesn’t suddenly make them a leader. Sometimes it just gives the wrong person more influence. That can be dangerous. Develop everyone as leaders. Then let leadership emerge. 🔥

Yup!
You can't want more playing time, a bigger role, leadership responsibilities championships, or to play at the next level If you don't want to work hard, to make sacrifices, to discipline yourself, to be coached, to be held accountable. Wants come with requirements.

Love this by @inkyjohnson Many think they’ve gone the extra mile when they’ve only done what is expected. Reward those who’ve done extra, not those who get by with the bare minimum. #BeRelentless

If only they knew it in the moment. Coaches who care don’t let players just get by, they push them and help them be better in all walks of life.
SOAP BOX THIS MORNING The hardest part of coaching isn't losing. It's caring so much. We carry our athletes—the ones struggling at home, doubting themselves, frustrated by playing time, or angry because we challenged them. Athletes: Your coach isn't your enemy because they hold you accountable. Sometimes the coach who makes you the maddest is the one fighting hardest for who you're capable of becoming. Parents: Don't fix every disappointment. Let your kids struggle, fail, and learn to get back up. Coaches aren't perfect. We're human. We make mistakes. We lose sleep over decisions. But we care more than you know. Because the scoreboard resets. The season ends. The uniform gets hung up. But who these kids become lasts forever. I don't need every athlete to remember every win. I want them to remember: My coach believed in me.
My coach challenged me.
My coach didn't let me quit on myself.
My coach cared about who I became—not just what I could do. That's coaching. That's the part nobody sees. And that's why I coach. 🏈

Be authentically you, regardless of the situation. It’s easy to show up when things go well, but who are you when there are tough times and things aren’t going your way? #ConsistencyMatters

Couldn’t agree more. Not easy to do nowadays, but those with a vision, a plan, and a steadfastness in their approach can find a way to change a culture and build something special. #Standards

Accountability is at an all time low. Entitlement is at an all time high. Working hard separates kids nowadays. It used to be the price of admission.

Amen to this. It’s easy to find ways out of things, but special people and players find ways in! It might not happen on the first try but they are not deterred and they keep searching until they’ve arrived. After that they work even harder! #BeRelentless

25 years ago today I lost my big brother & hero, Bill Hunt. You may have been killed that day, but they couldn’t take away all the good that you brought into this world through your love & spirit. I am so proud to be your little brother, but I miss you terribly. Love you brother.

Coach, you nailed it with this one. Coaches don’t enjoy telling layers that they have much to work on, but they do it because they want to do right by players and see them be the best they can be. The problem is that honesty isn’t always appreciated!

True in every way. The work can be boring but it leads to results that are really exciting! It takes a special mindset to be willing to do the work when no one is applauding!
Everybody wants to be elite until they realize how boring becoming elite can be. Same drills. Same details. Same work. Over and over again. That’s the separator.

Absolutely love this. So many ways to win that aren’t associated with coming out on the right side of the scoreboard. Champions are champions all the time!
Basketball Taught Me You can do everything right... ...and still lose. That's not failure. That's life. Judge yourself by your preparation and effort—not only the outcome.

Success is built in the lonely hours of work that players are willing to put in. There are plenty who say they want to win at a high level, but very few who are willing to commit to making it happen.
The results you want tomorrow require work today. You can’t avoid or shortcut the process. It takes what it takes. Show up daily. Commit daily. 🪵🪓

Facts.
A coach who challenges you, holds you accountable, and pushes you past comfort isn’t attacking your character, it’s an act of belief. It means they see your potential and are invested in your growth. When it’s real, it’s felt. And over time, it’s deeply appreciated and respected.

Student-athletes, If you have to be told to: • Show up on time • Compete • Attend class • Do your work • Train hard • Fuel up & hydrate • Get proper rest & recovery • Study your plays • Give your all… You’re not really THAT passionate about the game!
