Punishment via running is lazy coaching.
I love the phrase that @CoachEssential taught me: You're telling on yourself

This is more about an inability by the coaching staff to communicate effectively than it is about the athletes' inability to execute a game plan. This is telling the world: "we've told them 100X ." As the fine gentleman @CoachEssential like to say, you are telling on yourself
You can tell Fran Brown is not happy after that game. He’s making the entire team run sprints post game right now.

Every week, I read that youth & high school coaches are bad & the problem, but also that they should be the arbiter of who does & does not play basketball with no questions asked or alternatives provided?

A5: Little details matter, ALL THE TIME. Every situation needs to be completed at the highest level you have available every time. Also, rep as many situations as possible, both as players AND coaches. Situational coaching is something that should be practiced as much as playing
Q5: Congruence
Diagnosing the situation and being able to put yourself in a better frame of mind will be key to avoid the crush and keep perspective.

A4: Not the only reason why, but it is a reason I'm not coaching currently. However, it reaffirmed my belief that you have to take care of the details AND that you need to execute every time. NEVER leave anything up to doubt or in the hands or minds of outside influences.
Q4: Alignment
It’s crushing in the moment AND it can fuel a better future.
How you and your team respond to the crushing feeling sets you up for what’s next.

A3: Team was great. They continued to work hard and give everything they got. Basic takeaway was to take care of the details of performance and focus on the little picture. Also, learning that no matter how hard you work, sometimes it doesn't pay off. Me? Different story.
Q3: Clarity
Some of those lessons are on the playing surface.
Some of those lessons are in the locker room.
Some of them are in recruiting.
Some are in…what’s your answer?

A2: It was the situation. We were not a good team and were scratching and clawing for every positive. Kids had worked their butts off. Wanted that win for them to feel the pay-off of dedication and effort. Selfishly wanted it for myself as I was doubting my own ability.
Q2: Awareness
Name what it was.
It’s important to own that part.

Fall 2021. v Southern High School. They had 1 win, we had none. Was our most "winnable" game of the season. Were winning in the 4th quarter with little time left. Gave up a 4th down TD. Drove the field and couldn't punch it in on goal line to win the game with no time left.
Q1: Reflection
We’ve all lost “the big game.”
There are so many times, “the big game,” isn’t to end the season - there are so many different forms of a crushing loss.
Let’s talk about it.

Had a discussion in this same ballpark recently about all travel sports. It used to be for the elite of the elite. Now it’s for everybody whose parents will start a team after they don’t make the four they try out for. Ruining local PAR programs.

Basketball is expensive because parents choose the expensive path. Nobody plays "rec ball" at the local rec center or YMCA. They pay an ex-player to rebound for their kid so they're "training". Parents travel to every game. Teams play in big, new facilities. These are choices.
Basketball has unofficially become an upper middle class & rich persons sport. It cost anywhere between $30-100 per hour to get a kid basketball training & to play on AAU teams can cost anywhere from $300-600 and that’s without travel, hotels, food, gas, new shoes, etc.
Today if a kid isn’t getting trained year round they almost have no chance of making the NBA and the average American parent doesn’t have the funds or time to invest into development.
Historically, players that came from low income backgrounds is what made the NBA because they play with a flair, passion & hunger that typically comes from not having much (LeBron, Magic, Kareem, Wilt, Iverson, Isiah Thomas, Shaq, KD, D Wade, D Rose, KG, Westbrook, Harden, etc).
Today’s NBA is filled with mostly players that come from upper middle class, well to do families or foreigners and that’s why it seems so uncompetitive and passionless which is why the ratings are way down. It’s so much money in youth basketball today so it’ll never go back to how it once was & them doubling down on prioritizing foreign players doesn’t help with the average American interest.
I believe within 15 years the NBA will be completely irrelevant in America.

Me, when a game is my scout and a kid who hasn’t hit a three-pointer in two seasons bangs one in the 1st quarter:

This is a coach's inability to process the trauma of the moment (in game failure) bleeding out all over his players. This is not healthy. This is not "coaching hard."
This is as much a failure of skillset (ie emotional agility) as any on field breakdown.
We must be better.

Players...did you improve your actual skill level over the summer?
Did you come in prepared to contribute in a true basketball setting?
Or was it just about the exposure?
Scary stuff if it was.🎃

I wasn’t big on AAU. The men’s leagues I played in made me such a better basketball player. Playing against guys much older than me really helped me develop a toughness on the court you can’t teach in individual skills
