Peter Dinklage on the day Leonardo DiCaprio walked right past him unnoticed
"I was being harassed a little bit... and Leonardo DiCaprio walked right by me in a baseball cap and sunglasses and he just went and gave me a little nod."
"I was like God they don't even know because they're not looking for Leo they just see me."
The most famous dwarf on the planet gets stopped on the street while Leo strolls by in full stealth mode. Fame hits different when you're the one people are actually looking for.
Smallville really did spend ten seasons on Clark before he ever put on the suit, and that slow build was rare for a superhero show back then. Plenty of later shows followed the same path with a young hero still figuring himself out. So he's only half joking. Welling not letting him off the hook is great.
Michael Rosenbaum says “Smallville” was “really the first” TV series to explore a famous superhero’s origin story:
“And then they started ripping ‘Smallville’ off by doing all these other shows.”
Rosenbaum: “I’m just kidding.”
Tom Welling: “No, you’re not.”
Rosenbaum: “Sort of kidding.”

The "aside from myself" part is the most Tarantino answer possible, but the pick fits. Fincher is known for obsessing over the shoot and the edit, and that's the part of the job Tarantino still loves. In this clip he says production is just as exciting as it was the first day, and it's everything around it he's tired of. I can see why he'd admire someone who lives on set.
Quentin Tarantino says David Fincher is his favorite director.

Darren Aronofsky says he got the call about Batman while he was editing Requiem for a Dream, and he hoped the studio's interest would get him The Fountain instead
"I was in the edit room on Requiem"
"a need to author some stuff"
"maybe they would let me do this crazy thing"
"Chris Nolan had the launch of his career off of it"
Nolan took Batman and rebuilt the superhero movie with it. Aronofsky used the studio's interest to get a strange, expensive original made, and he still calls Nolan's version great
"So when Batman came on, I really wanted to make The Fountain"

Dakota Johnson says almost nobody controls how a movie turns out anymore, and she once signed on to a film that was a completely different script by the end of the shoot
"we don't have control over how something turns out"
"No one does"
"signed on to a movie that is by the end of shooting it a completely different script"
"my actual body and my actual mind and my heart"
she was the face on the Madame Web poster and took most of the jokes for it. Her point is the honest one: the actor gives the body and the heart, and somebody else decides what the movie becomes
"But you can't do anything about it"

Sandra Bullock says that while she shot Gravity mostly alone inside a box, her only connection on set was the sound mixer and Alfonso Cuarón, and the mixer played her music to get her into each moment
"I was literally within the box"
"The only relationship I had was to our sound mixer and Alfonso"
"I learned how to disconnect the head from the body"
"that's my performance"
Gravity won seven Oscars, and the performance in the middle of it came from a black stage, a dot she had to treat as George Clooney, and a playlist run by the sound guy. That's the part of acting nobody sees on the poster

Acting in a language you just learned is brutal, because you have to sound natural while thinking about every word. Most actors would get through it with a coach and some phonetic lines. She's this far into her career and still picked the harder road. I'm curious how Spanish audiences hear her in it.

That's a pretty honest thing to admit after a Razzie. It worked out, too. Writing his own movies gave us A Real Pain, which won Kieran Culkin an Oscar. Getting shut out of studio parts might be the best thing that happened to his career. I'd take another movie he wrote over him playing another villain any day.

Yorgos Lanthimos says his first day on an English film set shocked him, because the assistant director gave him two minutes to finish a take
"I'm going to go to England. I'm going to make films. It's going to be amazing"
"You have two minutes to finish this thing"
"I need four minutes. Is that OK?"
"they were lending me their clothes, their cars, their houses"
back in Greece, friends handed over their homes to get a film made. In England the money was real and somebody was counting his minutes. He still made The Favourite and Poor Things inside that system, which is the part young directors should study

Michael Douglas says he had to tell his father, Kirk Douglas, that he was too old to play McMurphy in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, the movie Michael was producing
"Kirk's too old"
"I had to go to my dad and say, Dad, it ain't gonna happen"
"if you get four good parts in your entire career, four really great parts, you're lucky"
"I give you half of my producing deal for giving me this opportunity"
Kirk had bought the book and still lost the part to Jack Nicholson. The movie won Best Picture, and years later, after a couple of drinks, Kirk still told his son he could have done it

Here's the clip. Kate Winslet explains in her own words why she chose small parts after Titanic, even when it seemed like the world was on offer.
Kate Winslet says after Titanic she took tiny jobs because she knew she still had a lot to learn about acting
"I took jobs that were tiny"
"I don't know how to be famous, but also I still don't know how to act"
"I still had a lot to learn"
"seemingly being offered the world on a plate because I had been in Titanic"
most people in that spot would have cashed in. she treated Titanic like a starting line instead of a finish, and that choice is a big part of why her career held up

Hugh Jackman says he's promoting his new movie door to door, in places like Milwaukee and Muncie, because now studios have to convince people to go to the movies at all
"like this is door to door"
"let's just not do New York and LA, let's get out there"
"in a way, the stars of the movie, folk heroes from Milwaukee"
"do the stuff that other people don't do"
he credits Ryan Reynolds with teaching him to do the unexpected. twenty years ago the fight was over which movie you picked, and a movie star turning up in Muncie, Indiana is a pretty good answer to the new one
