After 4+ years at Synthesis, much of it leading engineering for Tutor, I've resigned. It was a blessing working with such a talented team on a category leading product. I will always cherish my time at Synthesis. Now it's time to forge a new path at @sage_teacher. AI teaching hasn't lived up to its promise...yet. We cracked it. If you want to follow along, hop on the waitlist at sageteacher.ai
Some news: I resigned as Head of Product for the Synthesis Tutor. Friday was my last day. I am VERY excited for what's coming next. Follow along: @sage_teacher and sageteacher.ai To date, no one has built a system that can generate reliable, interactive, visceral educational experiences. Text, images, even video -- these are all passive media. To LEARN you must DO. Sage is building that My time at Synthesis was a blessing, and the best education I could imagine. Deep gratitude to @chrisman and @josh_dahn for giving me the opportunity to build a first-of-its-kind product with crack team 🙏. I will be cheering for Synthesis to continue breaking new ground.

I don’t feel confident shooting off the triple-pull yet. This is from Stage 3 of the @nrlhunter Grand Slam finale match. It had decent sized bobcats at about 360yds. The trickiest part of this stage was finding the second one. Thankfully we picked it up fairly quickly. Sometimes you just have to think - If I were an MD and dislike carrying steel up and down hills, where would I put it? Turns out that helped because the second one was just below the road kinda hidden in the shadows. Back to the triple pull - any tricks to get more steady? btw, follow me on IG. I post way more shooting content on there since it does way better there. same @.

Sage offers many opportunities for students to personalize their experience. They can choose to paint anything, and Sage will help them out with a pencil drawing to get them started.

No they didn't. Their homicide rates in those countries have not decreased following their stricter gun laws. Canada just banned the sale of handguns a few years back and our homicide rate declined more than theirs since then lol.
Yall claim America is the “best country in the world” yet other countries have implemented gun laws that have SIGNIFICANTLY reduced gun violence but did not outright ban guns. If it works in other countries, why wouldn’t it work in the “best country in the world”? Japan, New Zealand, Canada, Switzerland, Germany. All SIGNIFICANTLY lowered gun violence without banning guns outright.

We've been testing out this reading mode at home and it's quite compelling. It's not like an audio book, where you can kind of tune out as it drones on. The reader turns the page, even if Sage is doing the narration (which is optional). But what is really cool is how you can ask questions right then and there, in the flow, clarifying language that may be unfamiliar or somewhat archaic (we prefer to stock the library full of books with rich prose), or whatever it might be.
Sage's full library launching soon. Here is an excerpt of Sage reading George MacDonald's Photogen and Nycteris along with a student. In this case the student requested Sage to read it aloud, but he had a few questions for Sage about the language.

I've seen a lot of book demos floating around X. They're all kinda lacklustre because they're made just functional enough to post about. They avoid showing off the hard work it takes to actually make a physically realistic book that's beautiful. The library we're building at Sage puts in that extra 10% work that's needed - like well formatted text that wraps around beautiful illustrations.

My shooting partner Clark running Stage 16 at the Laramie NRL Hunter match earlier this season. 2 turkey targets at about 526 and 515 yards from 2 positions. This clip is from the largest, fastest-growing, and most popular find, range, and engage style long range shooting competition called NRL Hunter. We shoot in the teams division where we have 6 minutes to find our targets, range them, and engage them. Stages can be set up in three different configurations: 1 Target from 4 positions, 2 targets from 2 positions, and 4 targets from 1 position. A first round impact is 2 points and you move to the next target/position. If you miss, you can take a follow up shot worth one point. Either way you move to the next target or position after that shot. Max of 8 points on a stage for individuals and 16 for teams (both have to shoot). The Buffalo Bills Revenge match near Laramie, WY hosted was my favorite match last season. The terrain is incredible with lots of cool natural props to shoot from, tricky winds, and a really fun course of fire (usually has amazing food too). We’ll definitely be shooting it in the 2027 season. If you want to try out the sport, go to NRLHunter.org and view the 2-day Hunter schedule and the 1-day Games (basically the same, but single day more relaxed matches) matches. Games matches are added all the time, so keep an eye out. It’s the most fun you’ll ever have with a rifle.

Amazing! But how is CO going to handle this now?
🚨 BREAKING 🚨 ATF Releases NFA guidance in response to the Texas NFA lawsuit: "Effective October 9, 2026, ATF will no longer require individuals to seek ATF approval under the NFA before making or transferring short-barreled rifles, short-barreled shotguns, silencers, and “any other weapon[s]” as defined in 26 U.S.C. § 5845(e). ATF will also no longer require such items to be registered in the National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record. These policies apply uniformly to anyone otherwise subject to these requirements, not just to the plaintiffs in the litigation."

~10” square at ~526yds off a tripod. Clark and I have improved in a lot of ways since the Price NRL Hunter match back in June. We still need to work on our tripod shooting though. It’s a big focus of our training during the off-season. Best change I made following this match was going suppressed with a Thunder Beast Magnus-S-RR. I do not miss the concussion of a brake. Can’t wait for next season. Schedule is coming out soon! In the meantime, get signed up for our 1-day NRL Hunter Games match at Cameo on November 28th. Only a few spots left! We always want Sage to have a high degree of sensitivity to what the student does. This makes him feel smart and "alive." Sometimes this means recognizing unconventional solutions to a problem. In the cases in this video, I create a rectangle by combining two triangles. I do the same thing with a trapezoid, combining a square and a triangle. Sage is able to see what I'm doing, mark it correct, and then highlight the composite shape to further draw attention to the task at hand. The system is flexible, so the answers can also be flexible. This is the advantage of an AI teacher. Sage isn't just waiting for a predetermined shape of a correct response. He can dynamically make sense of the work. Sage isn't an app with an agent slapped on top. It is an agent with an app.

I think ecologists need to be much more concerned by the wave of proudly-ignorant anti-mosquito technology campaigns coming. It’s one thing to smartly apply biocontrol where necessary to reduce disease, it’s another to try to eliminate an entire family of insects for all time.

A lot of work has gone into building a realtime voice agent that knows about and is able to manipulate the interactive space and adjust appropriately to the problem at hand.
Here's how Sage Teacher handles wrong responses. He doesn't just wait for you to randomly fire and get it right. He doesn't just show you the answer and move on. Instead he takes a pedagogically sound approach, offering both strategies and demonstrations, with ample opportunity for the child to finish the problem. In this simple addition problem, Sage responds to incorrect responses in multiple different ways. 1) Sage provides the child with a strategy and lets them execute it 2) If that fails, Sage prepares a visual representation of the equation and asks the student to count them to produce the sum 3) If that fails, Sage assists the student in counting 4) Then Sage returns to the original problem and asks the student to select the correct numeral that matches the sum 5) If that fails, Sage executes the previously mentioned strategy to provide the answer in the context of the strategy Any successful attempt that was achieved through agent-assitance is recorded as such and provides opportunities for Sage to return to the concept or specific problem to see if the student can get the correct answer independently. Nothing is hard coded. The agent has access to tools and is choosing the appropriate support given the student's history. This is what the future of education looks like.
