The world’s oceans are under heat stress, with average sea surface temperatures hitting 21°C, surpassing the record highs of 2023 and 2024. They’re expected to rise further as El Nino, a natural climate pattern that warms the tropical Pacific for months, develops.

Europe is the fastest-warming continent on Earth, heating at twice the global average. Right now 150 million people are living under extreme heat, hundreds have died, schools are shut, grids are buckling. Driven by climate change and global warming, the phenomenon of the “once-in-a-generation” heatwave is now occurring nearly annual. We were warned. More than 1300 excess deaths have been recorded since 21 June linked to high temperatures in Europe. Heat stress is often called the “silent killer” – and European homes, workplaces and schools were not built for these temperatures. @WHO is working with its Member States and partners to address the health threats posed by extreme heat through focusing on preparedness, prevention and stronger health system responses. In particular, we are encouraging European countries to implement heat health action plans, as part of the broader agenda to protect health against climate change. iris.who.int/server/api/core…

🇨🇳 China's answer to a brutal heat wave: send out the water trucks. On the hottest days, sprinkler trucks hose down the roads so the water evaporates fast, pulling heat off the asphalt and cooling the air around it. It keeps the pavement from softening and takes the edge off the street-level swelter. They pull double duty too, knocking dust out of the air while they're at it. Writer: Julie

The richest 1% are responsible for the same quantity of planet-wrecking greenhouse gases as two-thirds of humanity. These are not natural facts. They are the result of humanity’s choices. We can, and must, decide to do things differently.
