ALT Screenshot of slide: What are phenomena? Phenomena are observable events that occur in the universe and that we can use our science knowledge to explain or predict. The goal of building knowledge in science is to develop general ideas, based on evidence, that can explain and predict phenomena. Definition from Achieve, Next Generation Science Storylines & STEM Teaching Tools

ALT Screenshot of slide: Phenomena are not just what we can observe directly... There is a beautiful image in blues and brown hues from the JWST telescope. This landscape of “mountains” and “valleys” speckled with glittering stars is actually the edge of a nearby, young, star-forming region called NGC 3324 in the Carina Nebula. Captured in infrared light by NASA’s new James Webb Space Telescope, this image reveals for the first time previously invisible areas of star birth. https://www.nasa.gov/webbfirstimages

ALT Screenshot of slide: Why Analyze Standards? Three dimensional standards are complex. Much is “packed in” to each one. Spending time making sense of the standard with others creates a clearer sense of the learning goals. In analyzing standards, we often generate some initial ideas about phenomena that we can explore more deeply later. Looking at standards can help us understand vertical alignment in our schools. Ensures we're teaching on grade level.

Web page sections listed say About, Readings, Resources, Journal, Projects. Text at bottom of image says: "Winter 2023 Graduate Seminar: Urgent Topics in Climate & Environmental Justice Education How should we promote learning in order to create more just, regenerative, and flourishing conditions for all Earthly beings, human and otherwise?"
